![]() And it was called that long before the International was dreamed of. The big race was always the Ebor Handicap, with its 20+ -horse field going 14f. Lest we forget, historic open handicaps like this one are not infrequently won by horses of group class, especially 3yos on the way up who get a weight break, like Protection Racket (who went on to Doncaster Cup-G3 and Irish St. Leger-G1 wins in the autumn) and the unfortunate Kneller (who followed his Ebor win with scores in the Doncaster Cup-G3 and Jockey Club Cup-G3). Great favorites like Sea Pigeon, Further Flight, and Sergeant Cecil have won the Ebor.
Back in the earlier part of the 20th century, the snobbishness about "group-type" horses and 'inferior' handicappers was not around (as the group system hadn't been created yet). So 'group 1' winners like Gladness and Cinq-a-Sept didn't disdain a run in the Ebor (both fillies won it). |

Sea Pigeon had a half-brother (by Tom Rolfe) named Bowl Game who was a sterling stayer in the US - Gulfstream Park H-G1, Washington, D.C., International-G1, Turf Classic-G1, Man o' War S-G1, etc. It's too bad their dam produced only males, all 5 of her foals, and this stout female line is unavailable to 'stiffen' all of the speed line sires of today. ![]() Mata Keranjang is my big bet of the day. Already shown good runs at this sort of level. The Godawful 2yo is the fav after winning a bad maiden easily. The Cole horse the value. As long as he hits the frame I'll be very happy.

![]() Great ride from Jimmy Fortune on Monitor Closely in the Great Voltigeur, nursing an Oasis Dream on a comfortable lead to last 12f. Favored Harbinger, the Gordon S winner, ran last. I had my eye on Mastery, the Italian Derby winner, who had been third in the 2-mile Queen's Vase at Ascot; he was the only one to keep on and ran second, could be a good one for the St. Leger.

My bet didn't come off, surprised to see he didn't do better than that considering his previous form. Very surprised Monitor Closely won, I thought he'd be easily outclassed here.

![]() Well, I put my $2 on Warringah in the Ebor and he nearly did it on the lead the whole way under top weight of 9-10. Having to repulse Record Breaker earlier in the stretch drained him out and the lighter weights caught him in the last 20 yards. Well done, Warringah, even if you didn't win. (Gave 11 lbs to the winner, 10 lbs to the second.)
By the way, the winner was a mare; no big deal, fillies and mares run with the colts all the time over there. Picking the winner of the Lonsdale Cup was no problem; Montjeu out of an Acatenango mare? the farther they go, the more he's going to like it. Stout German families like his are going to save the breed from the breed-for-speed-only lot. Look at Sea the Stars; think a Cape Cross was going to win a Derby with a bottom line like his? (His second dam was Allegretta, who was dropped in GB but whose parents were both German.) |

![]() Notice it was the 2yo who ran third, behind the two 'old men?' All-ages races are popular in Europe, too - the Abbaye, the Foret, the Chiusura in Italy, and the Austria-Preis in Vienna are open to 2yos and up as well.
