Default Sad News from Golden Gate Fields

I am saddened to report that "Chief", the starter at Golden Gate Fields passed away last night after being taken off life support. Chief fell, hit his head, and the pressure quickly built up in his skull and the doctors were unable to relieve it.

Chief was a great guy. He took his job seriously but he knew how to have fun. I'll always remember the fun we had at the Santa Rosa Fair last year and what he told me shortly after I claimed my filly ("I got good news and bad news for you", he told me right after the race. "Uh oh, what is it?" I asked. "The bad news is she's on the starters list." (she acted up in the gate big time that race) "What's the good news?" I asked. "She should win for ya next out" he told me with a smile.

Please keep Chief in your thoughts, we're going to miss him at Golden Gate Fields.

I got to meet Chief this year when he came up to the booth on Jockey Challenge Day as he is great friends with former jockey Vince Ward who hangs out upstairs with us at PM.

He was a really cool guy, and certainly a man full of life and excitement. very sad to hear.
