The fact of the matter is, the PGA Tour is one major sweet-heart deal to begin with, volunteers running and working the tournaments. If their revenue drops due to the economy, you can bet they will decrease purses.

They will get cut soon enough, unless the economy makes a magic 180 turn. Sponsors are dropping like flies. If a tournament can't get a sponsor, they will have to shut down. The purses may stay the same, but the schedule may be shortened which lowers the overall money available.

Wow, I'm glad we don't have that problem in horse racing!

after i thought about it. golf could help themselves. instead of a winner getting $1mill. drop it to $800k, take the other $200k and spread it among the lower finishers. the guys just scrapping to get by.

Darren,
I didn't look it up the exact number but the 130th guy on the money list scrapes by with over $200,000.

edit....I looked it up the top 211 players made over $150,000.

Only the top 125 have full tour status. The 125th best golfer last year made over $841,248. Even with travel expenses, that is a pretty good living.

Correct...but only 200 golfers in the world are capable of that......so their entertainment value is better than ours

Why should golfers take a pay cut again? The last I knew they were payed based on the position they finished in each tournament. Get paid by performance? As Bigs said if the tour loses sponsors the purses will go down which will equate to a pay cut. Not to mention that the players will make less in straight sponsorship deals.

I just reread the original article. Norman is stupid enough to be a politician. Do you really think that if the PGA "scaled back" its prize money 20% or so it would make a guy without a job feel better? There is zero correlation to pro sports and real life. It is just a stupid concept, If my life sucks than i will feel better if someone elses makes less money. These guys should make as much as they can. The money they play for doesnt come from the coffers of the unemployed.

The whole theory that because the economy is bad that successful people should feel guilty because they are successful is insane.
