Going to be there tomorrow and Friday nights. Anything to recommend in DFW besides the track?

If they pay me enough, I'll live in Iraq! (well... maybe not that extreme)

Seriously, I've never even BEEN to Texas... but if they want me, I'll certainly make the best of it!

I've lived somewhere in NYS my whole life. Maybe it's time for a change.

Might work out great for you... Texas is one of 7 states with no state income tax. You'll probably save some money. I've got a few friends in the Dallas area... I haven't been in a couple of years, but it's always fun when I go. Tons of stuff to do.

If you go to Billy Bobs, then you need to go Lonesome Dove for dinner. It's about a block away and some of the best food I have ever had.

JoeT Garcias in Ft worth is one of the best Tex - mex places arround but if you go to LS , the Simo pavilion has the best Nauchos anywhere. Get the combo. If ypu make it to Dallas try Bobs Steak and Chop house, He has two in the Dallas area , the original on Lemon ave , near Love Field and a new one out in the Addison area. Bob does alot of advertising and is a big supporter of LS and horseracing. The train from The stockyards to Grapevine is a nice afternoon and oldtown Grapevine is nice place to stroll with a lot of nostalgia. Get ready its HOT.

I lived in Texas for a year when I was in grade school.

Did you buy your cowboy boots and hat yet?

I never found Mexican food in Ft. Worth or Dallas. So please report back on your findings Phil. I need a place up there as I visit now and then. And my sister who lives up there has yet to find one. But something good must have migrated up there.

Dfw is thefranchised Mex food capitol of the US. While Joets is an intitution it has evolved into a franchised operation. Not what it was 20-30 years ago. Alot of mom and pop places around that have converted old DQs into mex food places but they are a hit and mis thing and end up closing after 6 mo or a year even if they have good mex food.

I lived there from 93-95. I was 23 and single and it was the best two years of my life, up to that point. I'm married now with a child and back in NY were I was born and raised. I don't think I would want to raise a child down there (no offense to the southerners on the board) but as a young single guy from NY, it was awesome.

I'd head over to the Dallas side of things if you are a yankee. You may find Fort Worth to be a bit hokie. Try either lower Greenville Ave or Deep Ellum (www.deepellumtx.com).

I'm from Florida, so technically I'm not REALLY southern, but why wouldn't you want to raise a kid in TX? I figured it'd be better to raise a kid in that environment. Just curious...

Schools aren't the greatest, unless you send your kids to private school. It's a different way of life than we've got up here in the NorthEast. It was fine for 2 years of fun in my 20's, but I think spending a "lifetime" down there would be different. Weather is tough also, no seasons. As far as the enviorment goes, once you get out of NYC itself, there are quite a few areas to live here that would be considered good healthy living.

I am a Texan and I really have a very hard time with Dallas/FW. To me the area is extremely ugly, that just me. And it is a cultural desert imo.

I love Austin and I love San Antonio. But they are both getting so big. So Gator I dont think its the state as much as the particular city in the State.

I personally think Phil has been invited to a less than desirable spot.

The schools are horrible unless you are in the burbs. Dallas ISD is a mess. There are some very very good schools in the suburbs. Private Schools in Texas are not nearly as good as they are in other parts of the country because the urban blight has not set itself firmly. Most private schools are places to send kids that have had problems in public schools and need a highly restrictive environment. Or parents that dont want to hear any cussing in the halls of any sort. Depends on whether they are associated with a denomination or not also.

And in places like Highland Park the schools are very good but highly competitive and I would deem extraordinarily stressful as parents are competing against each other by GPA of their kids.
