Default P6 Question - "Separator" Horse

Thanks to all for the P6 symposium.

Sorry to double post this but I was so caught up in reviewing the original post that I added my post before I realized I was adding it to the archive.

Here are a couple of P6 questions.

I have heard on ATRAB people describe a horse as a "separator", by which I think they mean a B- or C-type horse that many players will not have. Is this correct? Is the idea to survive that leg by having a horse that many others do not, or is the idea to pick a horse at higher odds to get a better payout?

Also, I often hear people say that in some races you either have to single or have to spread. I think I recently heard someone say something like - "If you don't single this race, you have to go 6 deep."

Is the decision to single or spread in a given race a handicapping decision, or is it a ticket structure decision? In other words, do I single by revising all but one of my As and all my Bs into Cs? And is spreading the same as including all As and Bs? Or do I look at my budget and say I can only afford to play if I single at least one race, and pick the best race to single?

Thanks.

I am far from knowledgable about this but I will say this. You don't pick a race to single in, you pick the horse. Me personally, I look for these things when I am trying to find a single

1) Forward moving, improving
2) Looks like he will get the trip that he will relish (easy lead, pocket, lots of speed)

Odds mean nothing in a single, you are just trying to get out of the race going 1 deep. Odds mean something in your 5 legs.

Citronnade is running on Sunday at Hollywood. I know this doesn't relate to the topic....but she's an easy single every time. Loose lead....slow fractions...then zaps them in the stretch.

GDub,

I agree with Scavs on picking a single. You can't look at a race and say this is the one I am going to single and then try to find the horse.

I don't pay too much attention to the odds or think I am going to get a better payout with one horse or another. I don't worry about separating myself from the other players with a horse either. A Pick 6 is all about survival, win the race and move on to the next, no matter what the odds. If you like the co-favorites and don't think any others have much of a chance, throw the two favorites in and move on to the next race. Don't beat yourself up trying to find that upsetter that nobody else has, esp. looking for "a better payout". I personally like to print out the "early" Formulator DRF before the morning lines are inserted and are staring me in the face. I try not to look at them, but they sometimes enter into my thought process as much as I like to say they don't affect me. I like to put my ticket together not knowing what the M/L is on any horse, that way it is my opinion and mine only.

As far as a singling or going wide, I do that completely by feel (a handicapping decision to answer your question). As Scavs stated, if I think a horse has the proper set-up (i.e. lone speed or the only closer in a race full of cheap speed or completely outclasses the field IMO) then I have found my single. I don't actively look for one, they usually stand out and are there for the taking once I have looked at all 6 races. Going wide usually happens on it's own also, I usually mark the horses I like as I go through the race, once I have looked at all of them I go back and see if I can eliminate any (or downgrade from B to C or C to X) and if I still have multiple A's and B's then I go with my instinct and put them in.

Pick 6's are all about survival. Just hit the race and move on no matter the odds or whether every other ticket in America had that horse.

Good luck.
