![]() It's a shame that it was a miserable weather day for the Pegasus at Gulfstream but it didn't stop a
trio of players from making some virtual cash. Joly B takes the show spot by hitting the late pick 4 for $166.40. It was a nice array and JB d'Etat was sitting on a bigger score heading into race 12 but his single could only finish 9th. Plenilune takes the number two spot with a win bet in race 6 on Dolce Lili getting a "Sweet" win payout of $8.60 and a return of $215. The winner on Pegasus Day was Ruffian and she "flew high" and easily bested the field. Ruffian played first time starter Hidden Scroll in the 4th and was rewarded with a win payout of $18. Hidden Scroll won by 14 which leads to the question "where did Ruffians Colorado Catnip wind up"? It sure didn't arrive at this scorers plate. Congrats on the win Ruffian. Was it the dam Sheba Queen or something else? Ruffian also got an ROI repeat and went from ice cold to hot hot hot. Following are the results which are pending any booth review. See you all next week as the Road to the Derby heats up with a lot more action. Congrats on your points win Joly and lead us to the promise land of Derby Preps. WIN... Ruffian... +$170.00... For next Saturday, I'm not completely positive on which Derby Prep to concentrate on, but for those of you who were at Gulfstream this past weekend, don't check out of the hotel or turn in the rental car just yet. We could well be right back at Gulfstream. After all, it IS groundhog day. ![]() The stakes races associated with the Holy Bull appear to be much more interesting than the programs surrounding either the Robert B. Lewis or the Withers; I'll await the actual entries and post something in a couple of days. |

![]() You sure you didn't use a Ouija board (or weegie board as we call it here in the South)? I think you must have hopped on one foot three times, turned in a circle with one eye closed, bowed toward Salem and drank a potion made of wolfsbane before you looked at the PPs. You took 8 shots out of about 200 horses and hit two of them. I think your resume' must include high priestess of the dark arts!!
![]() How ever you do it ma'am, well done. ![]() ![]() Last edited by cal828 : 01-29-2019 at 08:03 AM. |

Alas, the more I study the pp's, analyze the pace projections and even out of desperation look at the Thoroughgraph figs, the more I seem to gravitate toward horses that most other players like, and they invariably pay low prices. That means that I have to consistently hit at a very high percentage to beat the dreaded takeout, an increasingly difficult thing to do as more and more computerized algorithms seem to dominate the pools and seem to squeeze the value out of a wager in the final minute or so. And yet I find this game fascinating. Last edited by JolyB : 01-29-2019 at 09:10 AM. |

![]() Yep, it's like both you and Ms. Ruffian alluded to when you said you hated it when a horse you picked plunged from fairly high morning line odds to favoritism in the race and she made her reference to GMTA. Whatever you or I have picked up on in a race, probably a whole lot of other people have too. I sometime tell myself that in my real plays, I'm just not going to play unless I see a true longshot, but the problem is, it hardly ever happens. I probably hit something as high as 25 to 1 maybe once a year. Yet, I play on.

![]() I personally think racing is a game of chaos sometimes. What is logical sometimes is not and what makes no sense provides you winning bets. I think value exists in horses 4 or 5 deep if you take your time and don't jump the gun as I oftentimes do.

I very seldom see things in a race that are illogical. It seems like there are usually reasons for everything that happens in a race to me, but I think sometimes things happen that are less logical. For example, sometimes you see a race and you think, how could that horse win this race because his or her speed figures just don't indicate they have the ability, but sometimes that all depends on who made the figs. I usually rely on brisnet figs because you can get the free ones so easily, but sometimes there is a vast difference in those figs and those provided by DRF. ![]() What I meant by 8 shots was that you took four last week and four this week resulting in wins in the last 2 contests and I don't know how many horses that really was, but was just guessing about 10 each race, but in reality might have been more.

![]() Sometimes at the track the horses talk to me... does that count?
At Tampa Bay once, I had a friend from Michigan waiting for me at the track. I got there, got a Form, found him sitting on a picnic table waiting for me. The horses were just coming to be saddled. I don't usually bet color, but 2 greys went by and both gave me the eye. They looked pretty good. I think it was the day a Sam Davis stakes was running. Both longshots. This was race 1. I told my friend to go and box them for the exacta. We hit. We should have bet more. It paid $400. |
