GOOCHLAND, Va. (AP) - A new program by the Virginia Department of Corrections is giving inmates and retired racehorses a second chance. The program called Greener Pastures is located at the James River Work Center in Goochland County. Through the program, inmates gain job skills training in handling horses and provides a facility for horses no longer active in racing. Currently there are seven horses and six inmates participating in the program. They are responsible for taking care of the horses and spend several hours with the animals each day. The program is a partnership with the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation. |

![]() I've heard about it and other programs like it and while i wouldn't exactly wanna spend my retirement there, it's nice that they're able to find places for a few of the many horses who need a home.

![]() A friend of mine has been giving me sponsorships of a couple horses through TRF for the last few years for my birthday. One of the horses is at a correctional facility in Lexington- I actually visited him a couple of years ago when I was nearby on business. It's a terrific program.
