Friends? No. A very smart man once warned us about alliances. (Also said to stay the hell out of european politics, and was so right about that. )Because , one may agree with another on something. Or even several things. But no one can find someone who agrees with them on everything.
That's the thing, whose side do we take? Well, it should always be our own of course. But its not always easy to figure out who would be our best local partner.

Now,Thomas was right. But there is more needed. You have to be able to win, else why bother? Cause, if you can't win, you end up with Afghanistan, a war we are still in.
So, for Syria...do we have the authority? A just cause? What would our intention be?
And most importantly...who exactly would we assist? Who would we want in charge? What would the results be? If it would go as our last two efforts have gone, then my god, why do a thing? Haven't we mucked things up enough already in that region?
We and our euro allies have done our level best the last hundred years to completely **** up the middle East. lies in ww one, borders drawn arbitrarily with no input from the people actually living there.
It's like when we kept relocating our native population. But, instead of land, gold, etc...now its oil.
