Flashback

This Baffert colt won his debut at Hollywood Park on Saturday.

Going back all the way to 1990 ... just six horses have started their career in Southern California and went on to win the Kentucky Derby. '97 Silver Charm, '98 Real Quiet, '99 Charismatic, '00 Fusaichi Pegasus, '05 Giacomo, and '12 I'll Have Another.

Amazingly, Aaron Hesz apparently failed to uncover I'll Have Another and Charismatic...as he did not spend his one future book wager per year on them.

Calzone Lord 12-10-2012 08:55 PM

Hesz with Derby future book wagers since 1997:

4-for-16 (25% winners) and an ROI of $34.25

That is a ton of redboarding in one paragraph, holy cr*p.

He just won his career debut on Saturday.

Regarding the prop bet by first letter of name ...The letter A would have been a complete cinch in the Affirmed and Alydar year.

helicopter11 12-10-2012 09:40 PM

so if this bet was done in vegas, what do you tell the teller...."$100 to win on Flashdance"?

Calzone Lord 12-10-2012 09:42 PM

I assume you would ask to be quoted for odds on Flashback.

They would start him at 150/1 and you'd bet.

Actually, this is not entirely true.

I was kidding around with him via IMs once and asked him who he was going to win with in the future book this year, and he, very jokingly, said "Charismatic!".

The dude is a GOD!

Calzone Lord 12-11-2012 12:46 AM

I thought he had Monarchos in the future wagers as well.

I think he's cashed so many, that he's starting to forget them.

nothin wrong with those legs.

hoovesupsideyourhead 12-11-2012 08:21 AM

and with the new system for graded points to get in the derby the future wager is even more sketchy..imo

And that was the biggest grossing R rated film of its year (beating out the one with the boiled bunny).

In some of the shots, her dancing double is a dude.

Dahoss 12-11-2012 09:33 AM

I'm thinking about making a future wager on Shakin' It Up. Unlike Hesz, I'm only going to redboard having Giacomo in the first pool, who I believe paid less than he did on Derby Day.

I don't know; I just looked up the top Billboard hits of 1985. Let's have a walk down memory lane, shall we?

Billboards top Hits of 1985

1. Say You, Say Me - Lionel Ritchie Hello? This is not what I'm looking for.
2. We Are The World - USA for Africa Right. The US's "f*ck you, Band Aid, Americans can do a benefit song, too, and we'll do it BETTER. Except it won't be.
3. Careless Whisper - Wham! Back when we were still pretending George Michael was straight.
4. Can't Fight This Feeling - REO Speedwagon This song makes me crawl along the floor. To escape it.
5. Money For Nothing - Dire Straits Okay, this is a great song.
6. Shout - Tears For Fears The "Hey Jealousy" of its year. You COULD NOT ESCAPE IT.
7. Broken Wings - Mr. Mister How many bad metaphors can one song hold?
8. I Want To Know What Love Is - Foreigner Sorry Foreigner; I'm not going to show you. Because this is a terrible song.
9. The Power Of Love - Huey Lewis & the News "Don't need no credit card to ride this train" BECAUSE YOU CAN PAY CASH FOR TRAIN TICKETS. JESUS CHRIST, HUEY.
10. Everybody Wants To Rule The World - Tears For Fears Better than "Shout," anyway.
11. We Built This City - Starship For this song alone, the entire decade of the 1980s needs to apologize. Oh, Grace Slick, why? Why?
12. St. Elmos Fire (Man In Motion) - John Parr I made fun of this song all the time until I found out it's actually about a paraplegic athlete. Then I felt like an a**hole.
13. Everything She Wants - Wham! Okay, maybe this song is even worse than We Built This City
14. Heaven - Bryan Adams "When I'm lying here in your arms, I'm finding it hard to believe we're in Heaven" WHAT DOES THAT EVEN MEAN? He's dead and he's trapped in eternity with this person?
15. A View To A Kill - Duran Duran If there was ever a band that just strung words together and called them lyrics, it was Duran Duran. And yes, I had their poster on my wall. Shut up.

VOL JACK 12-12-2012 10:56 PM

I was only 6 years old in 1985 and I knew that "Money for Nothing" was an all time great song.

I'm also pretty sure I knew George Micheal didn't like girls.
I was a pretty sharp lil dude... riding around in my parents IRoc ( t-tops out) with the rat tail flowing.

Shut up.

And we haven't even brought up "Get out of My Dreams (Get Into My Car)."

It's possible, though unconfirmed, that I may have been known to sing along to "Even the Nights Are Better" at some unspecified time and place, though rumor has it that it was a public place.

Speaking of which, there is a hilarious literal video version of "Making Love out of Nothing at All" I'll post it in Esoteric.

My brother (R.I.P.) played Air Supply non-stop in our room growing up. NON FREAKING STOP.:wf

sorry he's out of the derby. why didn't Gomez switch to the right hand while it was still a hoss race ? If someone told me 3 years ago Kevin Krigger was gonna win the Santa Anita Derby, i would have tried to steal their weed connection.

i can't wait to bang the bongos like a chimpanzee.

song sucks just like dire straits. if you could sit through a whole concert of them you should get a purple heart. a bonus medal for staying awake the whole time.

Danzig 04-08-2013 09:44 AM
