I don't like that there's only 23 races over less than 2.5 months to determine a winner of a contest that will get several thousand entries.

Why not start it on Jan 1st?

Arletta 02-15-2012 07:03 PM

Like it or not, your still going to play right?

mclem0822 02-15-2012 07:43 PM

I'm playing :)

trackrat59 02-15-2012 07:53 PM

I'm in.

Kasept 02-15-2012 08:27 PM

Is there a DT league set up yet?>>

This is the spreadsheet I am using to keep track of nominees. Shared it out in case it helps people select their stable

Remember folks, you can select a 4th stable now, one that begins this weekend. No need to have Out Of Bounds, Algorithims, etc.

Kasept 03-07-2012 07:28 PM

Everyone signed up, yes?

Don't forget all.....

This week you can add 3 horses to each stable. Very important for those who have seen some of your horses such as Out of Bounds fall off the trail. Good Luck with those picks all!

Mike 03-23-2012 12:55 PM

I'm going to wait, as you need to add the three horses all at once. I was hoping we could spot pick the three over the next two weeks.
I might have to wait until the night before the Wood Memorial and Santa Anita Derby,so that by then I hope to know who will be pretty much lined up for the Arkansas Derby and Bluegrass the following weekend. However, with Alpha's departure from the La. Derby, I only have Discreet Dancer in 2 of my 4 stables. I'm not so confident of him, so I'd like to see Cigar St. get in after a good workout tomorrow afternoon.

FATPIANO 03-23-2012 02:09 PM

concentrate on the Grade 1 races for your 3 ad ons.

rpncaine 03-23-2012 04:21 PM

Glad you posted this. I wasn't aware that you had to add all three at once! I'm waiting too. Can't believe the Spiral or Sunland will produce much this year.

Mike 03-24-2012 05:40 PM

Went The Day Well's win today was huge victory for me today. I have him in 2 of the original 3 stables (though not the additional stable). From here, he goes to the Bluegrass.

rpncaine 03-25-2012 11:50 AM

Maybe I was wrong. Went the Day Well could be a threat.

Mike 03-29-2012 06:26 PM

I'm going to pick up three new horses for 2 of my 4 stables. The other two, I need to save the picks for a few Grade I's (to make sure I have at least two options in each of the Grade I preps coming up).
I'm in a position to select two horses running in the Louisiana Derby, Mark Valeski and Cigar Street. The other hole I need to fill is the Bluegrass, and as an option to Hansen, I've picked Drill. At least he's committed to the race, not so sure about Hansen.

Instead of Drill, I might substitute Attenborough (planning to run in the Bluegrass) in my other two stables. He would definitely stand out as a longshot it leapfrog me if he wins it

Just a guess but because you can have muliple entries this one may have added last week. They wait till a big racing weekend and add a new entry to win the weekly prize using only horses that are running that weekend and trainers and jockeys that are most likely.

Seems true, but according to the rules you need to do this 7 days in advance of a scoring day.

Congratulations on your dominance of the Road To The Roses here at Derby Trail! Took home the 1st and 2nd place:tro:

My strategy for next year's RTTR contest:

Always wait until Friday evening before the start of the competition or next stage before submitting picks.

Initial horse selection for Stage 1:

Earned 2 yo Bris figs of 90-100, 2 yo Beyer figs of 85-95.
In 3yo season, Bris fig of 100+ should mean automatic inclusion.
Late Pace Bris fig of 105-110 should be the benchmark of choices.

California based horses did well in Derby in 2012(S.A. Derby top two were 1st and 5th), but the B.C. Juvenile runners all did very well during the season. Bodemeister had been in San Felipe but rerouted to Arkansas.

Picks for Stage 2:
Wait until the eve of the the four Graded preps that were this year the Wood, S.A. Derby, Bay Shore and Illinois Derby.

Picks for Stage 3:
Unless you somehow missed an emerging horse prior to Stage 2, go for the points available in the graded races of the Jerome, Lexington and Derby.
Don't give in to the mystery horse from Europe

Thanks guys! Made plenty of mistakes along the way,( including not activating I'll Have Another for the Derby in my best stable ) but managed to stumbled to the wire...

Best strategy I had was initially not including horses in my stable that were pointing to races after the 1st draft. I like your strategy suggestions Mike and always liked this contest. I hope next year they start it a little bit earlier in the year and I never seem to pick the right trainers or jockeys.
