Came away from Saturday feeling like an opportunity was missed as hits at Aqueduct ($96) and Santa Anita ($142) and puny GP conso ($10) fell $35 short of squaring the total investments on multis. Having $19.20 Star Channel and $37.40 Charlie A as “C’s” on the Gulfstream P5 was two too many, as one needed to be an “A” or both “B’s” to catch the $1,323 P5 and/or $378 P4 prizes. Hope everyone did well. MLK Holiday Monday provides some terrific racing and carryovers at both Aqueduct (Jimmy Winkfield) and Santa Anita (San Pedro). The Smarty Jones anchors the Oaklawn card.

Some of the obvious players scratched out of the late P4 sequence at Aqueduct Thursday, but things worked out nicely anyway as $17.80 Voodoo Tales keyed a very good afternoon. Vulnerable Pletch stretch fave Violet Hour was dueled into submission by Esquivel and Voodoo Tales and not only generated a $195 quad hit, but triggered a bulky $367 triple ($1) with 11-1 Hugh McMahon invader No Means No up for 2nd. No Means No hinted at being a great exotics candidate given the Laurel N1X regular was clearly in NY for a shot at the nice $53k starter ALW pot. With the solid purses available these days in Maryland, you had to think that McMahon wouldn’t go to the trouble of coming to Queens without a viable runner. So, what at first looked like a problematic situation with the scratch of Royal Suspicion — whom I really liked and was going to essentially single — turned out to a fortuitous result. Hope everyone did well.

Gulfstream seemed liked the best candidate for Friday action, though Santa Anita ended up generating a $42k P6 carryover for later.. Big Weekend Preview ATR coming up with Hersh, Privman, Welsch, Tammaro, DeRosa, Hammerle and HRTV’s Amy Zimmerman.

Got fortunate at Gulfstream Wednesday as ‘C’ ticket converted for $105 to defray overall investment of $135 in the P5 & P4. $22.80 Where’s the Baby upset the P5 opener and was not on my radar at all, but at least when Starship Journey ($17.60) prevailed in the 7th, the back up ticket had life. The very obvious horses in the late trio — Private Ensign, Ack Rider, Wire Funds — not only came through, but dominated. Hope everyone did OK. An interesting late P4 at AQU today with a MSW with several options to start ahead of a 7th-9th that may only require a narrow band of inclusions..
