Default Faulkner on '55 Derby for SI

In honor of Sports Illustrated's 60th anniversary, SI.com is republishing, in full, 60 of the best stories ever to run in the magazine. Today's selection is from 1955, by Nobel Prize winner William Faulkner, who would win his first of two Pulitzer Prizes that year. In this, the last of two pieces Faulkner wrote for SI, he traces the buildup to that year's Kentucky Derby, which would be won by Swaps, ridden by Willie Shoemaker, in a dramatic finish. It was published in the May 16, 1955 issue of SI.
