Cox wasn't playing 3-horse trifecta boxes. If anything, a 3-horse box would be preferable because you could hammer it a bunch of times. Phil's point was that he's spreading too wide and playing $1 boxes, which will hardly ever produce the kind of score you need for tournament success.
