I'm missing data on the earlier Derby Trials as far as placings, but I tried to put together a list. I might've missed something but I wanted to note where they won 1 race & placed in the other, won both, or at least hit the board both times. I'd love to get data on off the board finishes (a la Don't Get Mad's Derby 4th) and just a straight up list of horses that ran in both. There's a Preakness correlation as well, but that's for another day.
1983 - Caveat won the Derby Trial and finished 3rd in the Derby.
1964 - Hill Rise won the Derby Trial and was 2nd in the Derby.
1958 - Tim Tam wins both, nearly wins Triple Crown.
1956 - Fabius won the Trial, 2nd in the Derby
1954 - Determine was 2nd in the Trial, then won the Derby; Hasty Road won the Trial, was 2nd in the Derby
1953 - Dark Star won both races, remembered for his Native Dancer upset in the Derby
1952 - Hill Gail won both.
1950 - Middleground was a bridesmaid twice, coming in 2nd in the Trial and Derby.
1949 - Ponder was 2nd in Trial, won Derby
1948 - Citation won both.
1947 - Faultless wins the Trial, 3rd in the Derby
1946 - Spy Song was 2nd in both races.
1942 - Alsab 3rd in Derby Trial, 2nd in Derby
1941 - Whirlaway lost the Derby Trial, then promptly won the Triple Crown.
1940 - Bimelech won the Derby Trial and finished 2nd in the Derby; that year's Derby winner Gallahadion, was 2nd in the Trial.
1938 - Lawrin is 2nd in Trial, wins Derby.
1927 - Osmond is 2nd in both.
1924 - The inaugural Derby Trial winner, the ill-fated Black Gold, won both races (incidentally, have always loved Marguerite Henry's book).
