After watching that, and thinking about it, there are only 2 possibilities for what Wesley was trying to do: #1: he had a personal feud with Smith, and wanted to knock him out, damn the consequences, or #2:he somehow believed, as happens frequently on punts near the goal line, Smith was going to try and block him (which you do see often, the punt returner comes up and blocks the coverage guy to keep him from downing the ball before it gets to the end zone), and he decided to hit before getting hit. Either way, it was a BRUTAL play, but I think #2 is far more likely.
