Blythe Knight given 'honourable retirement'
By Tom O'Ryan1.45PM 10 AUG 2009
POPULAR northern stalwart Blythe Knight, winner of more than £400,000 in prize money, has run his last race after being granted "honourable retirement" by connections.
» Blythe Knight career
The nine-year-old, trained by John Quinn for Peter Clay's Maxilead Limited company, won back-to-back runnings of the Group 3 Diomed Stakes at Epsom's Derby meeting in 2007-08, and, as well as being a top-notch hurdler, also won the 2006 Lincoln Handicap.
In total, Blythe Knight won ten of his 75 races, including two over hurdles. His final success came at Chester last season in the Listed City Plate Stakes.
"The time is right for him to finish," said Quinn. "His legs are fine, but he's got a few niggles here and there and earlier this season, after he'd pulled a muscle, it took him six weeks to come right, which was a sure sign that age is beginning to catchup with him.
"It's tough for him. He's rated in the mid-90s, so there are no easy options for him, and there's no way in the world that next season, when he's ten-years-old, we would contemplate running him in claiming races.
"He's been too good a horse for that to ever happen. Instead, we've decided he deserves an honourable retirement."
