In what is one of the all time great World Series performances, Mickey Lolich won games 2, 5 and 7 in 1968
and pitched complete games in all three. Game 7 was on two days rest. Denny McLain had won 31 games during the season but was not himself in the Series, so Lolich got the call for game 7.
He outdueled the great Bob Gibson, who won games 1 and 4, in game 7. Gibson also pitched complete games in all three starts.
Back to your question. Yes, but not anymore. They baby the pitchers these days.
Don't be surprised to see Hamels come back on short rest if the Phils are in trouble, but I'm sure they won't be.....
