Guess Square Eddie is OK; NTR in return..

Santa Anita: Eddie's track record
By Steve Andersen

Square Eddie broke the track record for 6 1-2 furlongs at Santa Anita with a frontrunning win in Friday's seventh race in 1:13.11. Making his first start since a sixth-place finish in the Grade 1 Malibu Stakes in December, 2009, Square Eddie set fractions of 21.47 and 43.47 seconds. He ran through the six-furlong mark in 1:06.81 and won by 3 1-4 lengths over Stacy's Hope. The previous record of 1:13.71 was set by Son of a Pistol in 1998.

G2 San Carlos (7f) is Feb. 19, and if they want to keep sprinting, they might consider coming East for the G1 Carter (7f) April 9.

(And by the way... He wouldn't have run in the Millions under any circumstance. He's an Ontario-bred. And not Ontario, CA.)

At what point will they stop bothering to note "track records" on the main track?

“He seemed healthy finally, and he hadn't been that great of a sire,” Reddam said. “So why not?" http://bit.ly/fMLNPg

What? He was just bred to mares in 2010. The foals aren't on the ground yet. Not "that great"? Most of those were Reddam's mares, and he'd said at the retirement that they weren't going to market Square Eddie very hard, so it can't have been about outside demand. It doesn't seem to be about fertility either.

I enjoyed Square Eddie before, and I really do hope he's back. It'd be great to have a talented edition to the older horse ranks. The quote from Reddam just struck me as odd. If he was temporarily retired until they could give him time off and check him, say that.

I think he meant that there was little to no interest by anyone to breed to him. 98 Beyer.

But he didn't try too hard to get interest. You can't make a half-hearted effort--sounds like it was even less than that--and do a private fee, then expect them to be beating down your door.

The track records for the old dirt course that was removed several years ago should remain on the books as the records for that course. This is a new course, a new surface, like when they enlarged Gulfstream and put in a new surface on a new base. The records set on this new surface should be for this surface only. When do you think that the speed figure guys will admit that their figures for this new Santa Anita surface are off kilter? <grin>

The speed figure guys are hardily the problem? The people making the figs are fine. The track is new and will take some time to develop into what it should be.
