Here's one that's hoping he wins and goes to the Derby

DerbyCat 04-21-2010 09:15 PM

How many horses have won this race and then went on to win the Derby the next week?

I don't know total winners, but a DRF article says that Tim Tam was the last to do so in 1958.

85/50 giving 4 pounds breaking outside and could bolt at any point. Not a solid fave.

AeWingnut 04-21-2010 10:01 PM

I need Pleasant Prince to get there so my future bets have a glimmer of hope.

Was it Don't Get Mad that ran 4th after running in the Derby Trial?

I'm pretty certain he got 4th just not certain he ran in the Derby Trial before running in the Derby

85 is better off outside horses
more cushion between him and the inside rail
maybe he won't be staring at the infield the whole race

He won the Derby Trial by 7. There are a few similarities between 05 and this years derby so I was just checking out the 05 pps.

I have not seen the pp, has Miner's Reserve been training forward? He looks interesting in this spot.

He had very quick workout the other day. A 1/2 mile in :46 flat I think.

brianwspencer 04-21-2010 11:22 PM

Don't Get Mad also finished in the top 50 in earnings that year.

I'm missing data on the earlier Derby Trials as far as placings, but I tried to put together a list. I might've missed something but I wanted to note where they won 1 race & placed in the other, won both, or at least hit the board both times. I'd love to get data on off the board finishes (a la Don't Get Mad's Derby 4th) and just a straight up list of horses that ran in both. There's a Preakness correlation as well, but that's for another day.

1983 - Caveat won the Derby Trial and finished 3rd in the Derby.
1964 - Hill Rise won the Derby Trial and was 2nd in the Derby.
1958 - Tim Tam wins both, nearly wins Triple Crown.
1956 - Fabius won the Trial, 2nd in the Derby
1954 - Determine was 2nd in the Trial, then won the Derby; Hasty Road won the Trial, was 2nd in the Derby
1953 - Dark Star won both races, remembered for his Native Dancer upset in the Derby
1952 - Hill Gail won both.
1950 - Middleground was a bridesmaid twice, coming in 2nd in the Trial and Derby.
1949 - Ponder was 2nd in Trial, won Derby
1948 - Citation won both.
1947 - Faultless wins the Trial, 3rd in the Derby
1946 - Spy Song was 2nd in both races.
1942 - Alsab 3rd in Derby Trial, 2nd in Derby
1941 - Whirlaway lost the Derby Trial, then promptly won the Triple Crown.
1940 - Bimelech won the Derby Trial and finished 2nd in the Derby; that year's Derby winner Gallahadion, was 2nd in the Trial.
1938 - Lawrin is 2nd in Trial, wins Derby.
1927 - Osmond is 2nd in both.
1924 - The inaugural Derby Trial winner, the ill-fated Black Gold, won both races (incidentally, have always loved Marguerite Henry's book).

If I remember correctly Don't Get Mad was a horse for course at Churchill Downs

Soaring Empire should love the mud/slop, no?

Houston won the Trial in '89 and was unplaced (8th I think) in Sunday Silence's Derby.

Alydavid won the Trial in '91 over Honor Grades and was unplaced in Strike The Gold's Derby.

Interested to see how Sadler runs at CD. On first glance Hurricane Ike could be very tough if he pairs his last.

AeWingnut 04-23-2010 09:40 PM

I think 85ina50 is going to have company on the lead.

I want PP to win so he can get in the Derby I believe the race would fit him a heck of a lot more than 85 ina 50

but Aikenite may ruin it for all of 'em

If he can make the extra furlong, he can surprise in here. I'm sorta on the fence, though........
