Here you go.

Whose position calls and splits are you using? I get some differences for the last two splits.

Bobby Fischer 05-03-2009 01:34 PM

most jockey-influenced kentucky derby of modern times?

Calvin Borel with the all time most dramatic example of how a race is affected by race shape.

I don't know where the Downey Profile got his splits but they are a bit different also...

Pace Fractions-- :22.98 (Join in the Dance), :47.23 (Join in the Dance), 1:12.09 (Join in the Dance), 1:37.49 (Join in the Dance), 2:02.66 (Mine That Bird)

Mine That Bird's Fractions--:27.18, :50.41, 1:15.59, 1:39.47, 2:02.66

Mine That Bird's Internal Fractions: Mine That Bird went the first quarter mile of the Kentucky Derby in :27.18, the second quarter in :23.23, the third in :25.18, the fourth in :23.88 and the final quarter mile in :23.19.

DRF's Forumlator has him running 26.52, 49.94, 1:14.54, 1:37.49, and 2:02.66

I guess they could have a mistake with the software though...

Because they have the five calls 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, STR, and FIN

And I believe the str call is the 1/8th pole.

I'm assuming the difference in first quarters is explained because one uses the flawed 1/5th of a second equals one length while the other does not.

I said after the race Hold me back ran by far the fastest 2nd quarter split.

It was the signature Kent Dedumbo ride.... Watch Free Country's replay in the La Derby. Why do top connections like Winstar and Mott consider him a top jock? He makes stupid Kamakazi middle moves up the rail on the backstretch in big races. His ride on POTN in the Breeder's Fut at KEE last October is worth a watch, if you need a laugh.

Yes Im bitter... I bet HMB....Im not saying he would have won, but whatever chance he had for placing was pissed away by the cajun rockstar down the backside.
Im mad at myself most of all because I know better. I thought going into the race that it was a HORSE race....Calvin Borail proved it is much more than that in a 20 horse field. Any other jock on MTB yesterday and hes an also ran!

The Indomitable DrugS 05-03-2009 03:13 PM

Here is how DRF Formulator has them ... and notice the software mistake of using the stretch call instead of the mile call ...

There aren't many 10 furlong races run a year ... but I assume the software will make the same mistake with each one until they replace str with 1m for call 4.

Yeah - he was rolling the dice and hoping he was on Skip Away.

Not many horses have the kind of stamina and can make a big sustained 8 furlong move like he was hoping for.

He rolled the dice and came up snake eyes ... Calvin Borel rolled them by taking the winner so far back even the fields dust couldn't reach him ... and his roll of the dice payed off in a monster way.

The trainer of Mine That Bird said he wanted him just in back of mid-pack in a pre-race interview - so I'm sure even he was shocked to see how far back he was.

ezgoerbaby 05-03-2009 03:21 PM

I don't know, but it sure looked like he had a rocket strapped to his little ass about halfway around the final turn.

I heard him say he downed his head in digust when they come by the grandstand the 1st time.

I heard he bet the 6 to make gas money for the trip home.

These are the splits I get for the winner, with a more reasonable beaten lengths adjustment than 1 length equals 1/5:

26.15, 23.48. 24.64, 24.27, 24.12

Considering the 2nd and 4th are pretty much around turns, this horse was absolutely flying on both of them.

The Indomitable DrugS 05-03-2009 06:12 PM

My gut feeling was that the chart caller has him in a little closer contact with the field than he was at the second call.

Hard to know what you can't see film of though.

cmorioles 05-03-2009 06:14 PM

I agree, he is probably off on that one.
