A shame.

DRF....

Crown of Thorns injured, will miss Derby
By JAY PRIVMAN
Crown of Thorns, the winner of the Robert Lewis Stakes earlier this month at Santa Anita and one of the top contenders for the Kentucky Derby, has "a little bit of a stress fracture" in his left front leg and will need several months to recuperate, taking him out of consideration for the Derby, his trainer, Richard Mandella, said Wednesday morning.

Crown of Thorns, owned by B. Wayne Hughes, has won twice in three starts.

"He'll stay here for a while, then go to Mr. Hughes's farm in Malibu," Mandella said. "He has the beginnings of a saucer fracture. He'll be fine."

Mandella, a Hall of Famer, has never won the Derby. His best chance this year now resides with another Hughes-owned colt, Into Mischief, the CashCall Futurity winner.

I thought horses didn't get injured on synthetic surfaces.

I wish that were true. However, we are finding that synthetic surfaces themselves vary from track to track. Santa Anita is the synthetic surface nightmare so far. I believe the rest of the USA/Canada all weather are performing well.

it definatly didnt help del mar w/ fatalities..

synthetic tracks are a waste of money

sumitas 02-20-2008 12:34 PM

There is a lot of room for improvement and I believe we will see improvements to current all weather surfaces. This is a good thing.

Probably be a dead horse if it was dirt.Barbaro says he would of given synthetics a shot.Maybe he would of made it atleast out of the 1st turn.See,Andy,ya gotta look at the glass half full. This 3 year old has "a little bit of a stress fracture." We all wish Barbaro had just "a little bit of a stress fracture."

hoovesupsideyourhead 02-20-2008 02:02 PM

but barbero was put through a huge painfull ordeal for his breeding possibilitys...only....

SCUDSBROTHER 02-20-2008 02:19 PM

I got a new rap song about horsebreeding. Here is a part:

Ba... Baka...Melo...Memakabiggabiggabone.....

justindew 02-20-2008 03:03 PM

Is " a little bit of a stress fracture " similar to being a little pregnant?

This barn prides itself in finding problems really early. He has been able to do well with horses with a bowed tendon because they find them so early. If he says it's the start of a saucer fracture, then it's like a nagging yeast infection(versus your pregnancy scenario.)Dinner anyone?

That's interesting. Thanks.

Hard to fault Mandella. The guy's a great trainer.

In listening to Jim Rome today on his radio show, it sounded like he and a bunch of professional athletes (Billy Koch and Tom Brady were the two I heard mentioned) were going to buy the horse before finding out he got hurt.

Anyone else hear all of the details?

zippyneedsawin 02-25-2008 01:53 PM

I believe that was the case. I heard Brady and Carson Palmer.. but the names don't really matter now.
