Good line-up! I like Romans' horse in Belmont's 5th too.

I highly recommend listening to Ben Liebman, especially if you are interested in learning about the NY racing franchise issue, as there is probably no bigger expert on the issue than he.

Nothing against you of course, but his is the segment I'm most anticipating. :)

Ben's the man and Steve should be applauded for getting him on the show. It was a great blow to the Racing and Wagering Board, and racing in NY State, when Pataki replaced Ben on the board ( for the wife of one of his campaign donors ).

I agreed, Bennett knows more about the legal and political side of horseracing than just about anyone on Earth.

Great Line up Steve. No Brad Free but a super cast nonetheless. Thanks for everything you do.

Paul

From what I have been told, he is also the most passionate person in regards to the sport that you could find.

For anyone who didn't read the thread a few months ago, here is the transcript to his speech last May:

There's a lot of corrupt bullsh!t that happens in every governmental agency but when Liebman got replaced for one of Pataki's donors that just about took the cake for worst trade ever. I was embarassed to be a New Yorker that day.

That's always a problem when you have politics involved. And no matter how good or bad the people on the board were or are, it just doesn't matter.

Unfortunately, politicos in New York use racing as their "Pat Webb" (the guy in Casino whose uncle was a Nevada Senator... "he's about as useless as tits on a bull") whereas they have 6 OTB's to stick friends and family that aren't good enough to do anything else in public office. Dumbest business model in the world.

Thx Andy.. He's been more than willing to come on the show but we'd had a series of badly timed attempts to have him... I'll call on him as often as possible!

That was a good interview. It's a shame pure politics put someone as knowledgeable off their board, more so since he's an academic who probably doesn't let BS politics rule his thoughts.

For what it's worth, and I'm sure he didn't listen to a word I said, I called Pataki on this. He was standing by himself inside the clubhouse at Saratoga one day the summer after this happened and I told him that I thought Ben's replacement was extremely unfortunate and that if it was ever correctable ( which I knew was ridiculous ) he should consider it.

At least now I know what gum feels like when you scrape it off your shoe.

Bigsmc 06-19-2007 04:49 PM

Steve,

Ask Jon White if he thinks the O'Neill trainee Big Picture in the 5th race is a big red flag. This drop is way too big to make me comfortable (loses by 1.25 lengths in an N1X and shows up in a 25k N2L 53 days later). Normally, he would be a huge play against for me, but it is Paul Reddam and he may just be culling his "herd" and he likes to win so he may be looking to recoup 25k and take the purse money. Nakatani sees fit. Mixed signals.

Thanks

I thought you were going to say that you had old Georgie on your speed dial

I can't think of a George in politics that I would call now that McGovern is dead.

However, I wish they would stop calling me.
