Scat Daddy- bar shoes

Jay Privan reported that Scat Daddy worked with bar shoes on both front hooves Sunday, but quoted Platcher as saying he won't race with them on Saturday

Someone help me out here. Why do horses run in bar shoes? Got bad feet? Or is it prevent measures?

Zaf 04-30-2007 06:49 PM

Usually to prevent the horses hoof from cracking.

JDank34 04-30-2007 06:52 PM

NOT a good sign at all. Bar shoes and for that measure bar shoes on a forgiving surface like polytrack= uh oh......BAD SIGN

if you were considering playing him, do you still? a warning bell in my mind. i was never high on the horse, certainly see no positives here.

Its not what I would want to hear, that's for sure. Didn't like him for a large piece anyway so it doesn't affect my view of him much.

well hey rand!! been wondering where you'd been, glad to see you're back--of course, if you haven't been gone, i guess i just missed seeing you.

Jamie isn't gonna like this!

even if it's just for training...it's not a great sign...he may have something fairly simple like underrun heels...but that's painful and certainly not going to aid him in giving his best run.

More info from a different article

Scat Daddy, winner of the Florida Derby and Fountain of Youth Stakes in his last two starts, has been training with bar shoes on his front feet and had them on for his final workout Sunday at Keeneland. However, he will remove them for Saturday's Derby and race in conventional plates, trainer Todd Pletcher said.

Bar shoes are usually used to protect a tender part of a hoof. The shoes Scat Daddy was wearing "keep him from putting pressure on his inside quarters," Pletcher said.

"He won't run in them, but he has trained in them," Pletcher said. "It's not something new. He's had bar shoes, or similar shoes, since July. I'd say that in the last year, for 10 months he's trained in bar shoes. He might not need them any more, but I'm not going to take a chance now."

Hmmm sounds little weird to me

Like someone who tears a ACL 2 yrs ago but only wears a knee brace in practice and not the game???

That's a pretty poor analogy. Is it possible Pletcher isn't telling the whole truth? Yes, but it's not particularly likely. Horses do train in bar shoes and not run in them sometimes. Horses run with bar shoes and win sometimes as well. Suggesting he has some debilitating injury ( like a torn ACL ) defies logic.

Sounds more to me like he already has his excuse however. A phony excuse....but they usually are.

I'm not concerned about it. If he looks lame in the paddock or post parade, then I'll worry... I haven't seen that thus yet. Agree that it's not a good sign, though.

You're gonna have to consult with you know who then.

Cajungator26 04-30-2007 08:25 PM

I can only hope that our board expert will be on hand to let me know just how sore he is.

But, will this news change how or how much you wager on him?

One can only believe that her services are so in demand this week that she won't have time to help us little folks at this time.

It's a bloody shame too. Every dollar I planned on betting is riding on her expertise. I had forgotten she teamed up with Justin Dew this week.
