DRF Closer Look
by Steve Grabowski

Race 9

Cactus City Road Shipper is offered for a tag following a couple of poor main track sprint tries up North; sire is just 4 for 64 with his first time surface runners but the dam did drop SW and 3 time turf winner Zoeling who banked 371K; barn is profitable of late with several today's applicable angles.

Chosen Heir Stretches out in his return from the freshening after showing excellent early lick sprinting first time at the level; 4 year old blew out sharply for this and he broke his maiden going long over the course a couple of starts back; one to run down.

Amber Coast Took a drop to the claiming ranks to get this 300K buy into the winner's circle though he did do it first time over the local sod didn't have a enough late after sitting a decent trip in his initial crack with winners here last month, but the barn boasts some solid recent numbers second off the break and Lezcano does stick with him for the drop to this level.

Majestic Man Returns quickly for the drop after failing to factor against better from the inside slot off this outfit's claim; maybe the class relief helps as his recent numbers do fit here, but the 5 year old has now failed to hit the board in 3 spins over the local course and the barn isn't having a stellar meeting.

Master Wesley Set the pace through soft splits in his first local start this winter and came up a little short late; he'll get another top pilot for this and has returned to work well for a sharp scond off the layoff barn; showed in his maiden breaker that he doesn't need the lead to fire and can certainly go better today; giving him the nod to beat these home.

Avenged Showed zero interest late in the last out slop after a couple of decent efforts at the level over the local green; should appreciate the return to this footing and Rosario sticks with him, but the barn has had its issues here this winter; still, he's a contender in here.

Sarava's Dancer Absentee is offered for a tag for the initial time in his return from better than a year on the bench; gelding was SP going long on the main track as a baby but he's clearly a different animal now and his pedigree doesn't suggest his best will come in his return to the green; just watching him today.

Mr J Rode the rail to victory in his return from the short break and now he'll move towards the outside for his first crack with winners; sophomore has been given a full month to get over the try, but he's going to need to keep improving in order to have a say in the outcome with these.

Toy Cannon Makes his first start off better than 8 months on the shelf for one of the better return barns out there; New York bred looked like a new animal when put on the lawn second time out at Belmont and though he didn'f face much in that spot he was pretty impressive against the clock late; he does draw outside and could well need one before we see his best but off what he showed on this type of footing prior to the layoff he can't be overlooked.

Forever Conga Ran down a slow clip to break his maiden here in career start number 7 before getting caught in a wide spot first time with winners; 5 year old has run numbers that fit in this heat, but the outside draw could again pose him with trip issues; consider.

Congrats to the partners on Toy Cannon's welcome return and big thanks again to Paul Pompa, Richard Kent (Ocala turnout/rehab) and Bill Mott and his staff for their patience.

Joe Bravo told me Cannon, though still a little green, felt great, was full of run and hopes he can ride him back in New York.

Let's hope the big gelding goes easy on himself and stays healthy, because we could have a lot of fun with him..

Rileyoriley 03-13-2013 06:20 PM

Any chance someone could put a link to the race? Had to work all day and didn't get to see it. Thanks.:)

Almost certainly no Cathy.. The plan was to get a fitness run in at GP and then head north. The first NY bred N1X ALW on grass last year was the opener on Wood Memorial Day April 7 and if that happens again, look for him there.

cabvmd 03-14-2013 04:16 PM

Thanks for the info Steve.

If he is still at Payson Park Easter weekend I will visit him.

If he gets in in NY I will be there.

Do you know of any DT members going to the FL Derby?
I would be good to see some of the gang, last time I saw DT folks was Travers 2012.

Really gearing up my Ski Club group for Travers 2013 since The Spa is 150 this year!!! It will be Monmouth Ski Club 6th annual Travers Day (minus the Hurricane Irene mess)

Returned home late last night after a fabulous day !!

Our party of 8 were just overwhelmed by how Toy Cannon looked and performed on the race track. We had several collegiates in our group as well (first timers) and they loved the Thoroughbred scene. It seemed that everyone wanted a Dee Tee Stable lapel pin of their own.

And what an unexpected surprise to meet and talk to the 2012 Trainer of the Year at dinner. I was literally looking at Dale's Breeders Cup Winning Photo while touring the "Little Mike" Lounge and when I turned around... there he was. I did have to inform him that he beat DTS as well as Paul for the win photo in the 9th.

Thanks again to Steve, Bill, Paul and all involved !!! We definitely have a lot to look forward to with Toy Cannon in our stable.

I cannot wait to seeing Toy Cannon up at Saratoga, but a 2nd place finish at Gulfstream on a picture perfect day is not so bad either....

Appears that Wood Day is anticipated opening day for turf, so Toy Cannon would almost certainly go in if that race is again on the slate.
