Quality Road wont run..

Now confirmed..

cowgirlintexas 04-27-2009 07:03 AM

:( Bummer....

Best interest for the horse though. Too bad... I really thought he was the "one" this year.

Bobby Fischer 04-27-2009 07:06 AM

whatever is best for the horse, stinks because I was leaning against.

Danzig 04-27-2009 07:08 AM

i'm not surprised. the only thing surprising is that it has taken this long to declare him out of the race.

I agree with you, after the second Q-crack on the front that should have been it. How could anyone have confidence in betting on this horse with all the Question marks, and would be an injustice to race fans on Saturday who were not paying attention. If a horse is not 110% then he should be scratch, to many horses in this race for one to pull up causing trouble.

joeydb 04-27-2009 07:35 AM

Will it still be a 20 horse field since they didn't have the post draw yet, or has the deadline for registration (or invitation) already passed?

probably-draw is mid week, it's only after the draw that no one else can get in.

my main thought is that since it's the derby, presumably the toughest race of the year for a 3 yo, that you must be in top form. running a horse less than at his best isn't fair to the horse. and yes, since it's the derby, everyone pushes harder to get in-but the prestige of the race itself shouldn't push people to do something they normally would not. also, having a horse not at its best-just where do you expect to finish in the race if you run it? better to skip and wonder, than run and regret it.

It really is a shame, I was looking forward to his KY Derby run. However, the good news is, he is being very well managed and we have a chance to see him later in the year.

cakes44 04-27-2009 08:02 AM

Is Patena in yet?

Sightseek 04-27-2009 08:09 AM

Too bad the best horse won't be in the Derby, but he'll regroup and kick butt soon!

LARHAGE 04-27-2009 08:09 AM

I'll bet JV rides Mr. Hot Stuff now, hey it beats sitting in the room.

lemoncrush 04-27-2009 08:13 AM

Really disappointed, but give credit to the connections for doing the right thing (even though I had a 50-1 future on him from Wynn).
Hopefully they get it straightened out and he's a force for the rest of the year.

lemoncrush 04-27-2009 08:15 AM

And...

could there be a more ironic name than "join in the dance", who now moves into the 20th spot?
:)

Already put $100 on him to win

if they run Join in the Dance, this Pletcher horse will actually help Dunkirk's chances by adding to the pace.

This Derby doesn't seem to have the early pace as other recent Derby's have. ( no Old Fashioned, no Pamplemousse, no Quality Road )

Thunder Gulch 04-27-2009 08:31 AM

At least I can proceed with handicapping the race. I would have picked QR before the injury, and even at less than 100% he was a pace factor. The other guys near the front look that much better now.

slotdirt 04-27-2009 08:36 AM

Definitely have to see how the track is playing, but with Regal Ransom and this Join in the Dance fellow on the front end, I think the pace should at least be honest for the 6f or so Join in the Dance will go before he stops.

CSC 04-27-2009 08:42 AM

This will hurt the pool, the trickle down effect will be huge.

Travis Stone 04-27-2009 08:47 AM

The first quarter crack was a non-factor in terms of making the race, this second one was the blow.

I prefer things like this to surface now than him to win the race and develop one between the Derby/Preakness or Preakness/Belmont.

CSC 04-27-2009 08:50 AM

I assume the horse most impacted from a betting perspective will be POTN and maybe F Fire, the 11-1 for POTN in the third leg of futures is looking like a steal right now.

SundaySilence 04-27-2009 08:56 AM

I have Mr. Hot Stuff at 150-1 in the future book. Lucky he got in on earnings, and was glad to get Nakatani off, and now he might get JV with QR withdrawal. Now just need a IWR type improvement moving to dirt, and a hot pace which it doesn't look like he'll get. Still can easily envision him in the 3rd or 4th slot.

Right now my top 3 are FF, POTN, and IWR. Someone commented above how much FF works resemble Hard Spun and I thought I read that Jones didn't want to go that fast with FF in his work today. I plan on keying around FF in the exotics.

Yeah me too.

It's a shame because Jimmy Jerkens was going to win a Derby for his dad with this horse.

Bobby Fischer 04-27-2009 09:22 AM

this hurts my win price on others , but it simplifies the exotics...
Was leaning towards others, but didn't have the guts to totally exclude him, especially if weather played a role.

tector 04-27-2009 09:24 AM

The quality pace of this race has fallen apart. At the risk of advocating something I am usually against, if I had Rachel Alexandra I'd think long and hard about this race now. But I'd have run her in the Ark. Derby first to size her up against the boys in a softer spot.

And hey you Dubai sycophants, one major contender is now out of your way--hooray.

Travis Stone 04-27-2009 09:24 AM

Is Join in the Dance is now going? If so, the pace scenario is totally different than it was 5 hours ago.

booner 04-27-2009 09:25 AM

Hate to see Quality Road out of the Derby. I was really anticipating seeing him go against IWR.

Hope he heals in time for the Preakness and/or Belmont.......

Join the Dance should add too the pace with his quick early speed.

Although I'm sure Pletcher and JV would both rather he be on Dunkirk (myself included), it's too late in the game to decide that now.

This will be interesting, Cordero will probably be working hard to get JV the mount. I remember there was another similar situation from a past derby that etiquette wasn't followed causing some ruffled feathers.

Saw talk of Take the Points showing interest in going, if enough fall by the wayside.
Article in local newspaper (Daily Gazette, Schenectady)

How so?!

tjfla 04-27-2009 11:46 AM

Only means the prices on the Sheik's horses will be going down!!!

Also this adds speed out front. Question is does it help the closers or the late pack stalkers?

If Pletcher runs Join in the Dance, Take the Points, and Advice, he's probably odds-on to saddle the last place finisher for a fourth year in a row (following Keyed Entry, Cowtown Cat, and Monba).

Pretty sure Take the Points isn't under consideration. . .
