Looks like they entered him in both.

FOY is a highpowered race.

Thanks Bigs

I wonder where he'll show up next. I thought for sure that he'd outrun his odds in teh HB and certainly did so IMO.

Fountain of Youth ???

I am curious as to if there is a post bias from the #12 post at 1 mile at Gulfstream. I know at 1 1/8 it makes a big difference, but how do you think it will affect THIS ONE'S FOR PHIL???

robfla 02-27-2009 09:08 AM

I think the outside post is the better place to be. There are only horses inside of him and therefore there is no chance of getting squeezed. That's a perfect stalk and pounce spot. On the other hand, I am very reluctant in betting the 1 post in an elongated sprint ( 7f - 1m at GP )because a horse can duck into the gap between the gate and the main track. Also, an inside horse's hand is forced in having to gun it if he is a speed horse on the rail.

I think they are taking the weenie route and going straight to the Florida Derby. Let's keep conditioning these horses to run every 5 to 8 weeks and then if they win the Derby bring them back in two and act surprised when they breakdown.

SniperSB23 02-27-2009 09:35 AM

Am I alone in thinking that This Ones for Phil can regress here, not like the distance, and still win easily? With the previous trainer he ran just as well at a mile and beyond as he did in sprints. His 6 furlong work suggests we aren't looking at a horse that was sapped from the big effort last out. He has plenty of experiencing going wide so shouldn't be hindered by the 12 post. I honestly don't know how the odds are going to play out in this one but I could easily see this horse slipping through at 5-1 or higher.

He's 15-1 on the M/L. I'd settle for half that.

I doubt it. I can't see him higher than 7/2. Who's going to take significantly more money? Maybe Notonthesamepage ends up a slight favorite, but bettors won't let TOFP get away again. He's the horse to beat of course, but this is a murderous field, so I can't take anyone at less than 4-1.

I think Capt Candyman Can will be bet down to 5/2 or 2/1 or Beethoveen winds up around 6-1.

While a bloodhorse survey is far from an accurate gauge of betting interest I still found this one interesting:

Bee Cee Cee 1% (18 votes)

Theregoesjojo 10% (136 votes)

Notonthesamepage 10% (124 votes)

Take the Points 3% (33 votes)

Jack Spratt 3% (37 votes)

Rocketing Returns <1% (6 votes)

Beethoven 15% (196 votes)

Break Water Edison 5% (69 votes)

Capt. Candyman Can 32% (417 votes)

Taqarub 9% (118 votes)

Quality Road 3% (43 votes)

This Ones for Phil 8% (100 votes)

I'd be both stunned and aroused if this happened re: Candyman.

I'll buy you a beer at the Wood if TOFP is higher than 7/2. Low-risk proposition for me.

Sounds good to me. You don't think the bounce theorists will be throwing their money around against him?

They might, but like you said, he could regress and still win. I think that'll temper the enthusiasm to bet against him.

Bobby Fischer 02-27-2009 10:43 AM

Pete!

Canadian -
Pete Anderson trying to psyche out the competition:
"If he wins, great, but to me this is like a mile workout for Dubai, and it will also give me an insight into his propensity to run on grass later in the year. But watch and see, this will be a screwed-up race because except for one horse, Hey Byrn, there isn't any speed in the field."

Bujagali , and Buddy's Humor with their outside posts may have to be used early here as well.

justindew 02-27-2009 11:00 AM

I think we'll see something like this:

This Ones For Phil (7-2)
Taqarub (6-1)
Beethoven (12-1)
Capt. Candyman Can (5-2)
Notonthesamepage (6-1)
Theregoesjojo (7-1)
Quality Road (a surprisinly-low 5-1)
Break Water Edison (15-1)

You're right. This race is better than almost all of the BC races last year. I honestly can't remember a Graded Stakes race as interesting as this one in quite some time.

CSC 02-28-2009 09:55 AM

The FOY a great betting opportunity for Theregoesjojo, he's going to be a great price today and with the added furlong he looks too tempting to pass up. I'm quite bullish on him today.

Travis Stone 02-28-2009 10:29 AM

If they don't post a 22-change quarter I'll be quite surprised.

Bobby Fischer 02-28-2009 10:43 AM

my guess at the off odds=

TOFP - 7-2
Candyman- 7-2
Jojo- 5-1
NOTSP- 5-1
Taqarub- 7-1

Scurlogue Champ 02-28-2009 10:52 AM

I think This One's For Phil goes off at 9/5 or 2/1.

Bobby Fischer 02-28-2009 10:59 AM

im hoping i can get the improving son of Candy Ride 3rd on my trifecta ticket...

Of course Theregoesjojo runs huge, but one of the few horses I didn't use runs huger. Ugh.

The Indomitable DrugS 02-28-2009 04:53 PM

Look for another blockbuster speed figure anyway. The race went 3.35 seconds faster than the other mile race on the card.

FreddyMo and the track super he is paying off to quicken the track strike again.

Ummmmm

They're only 'blockbuster' if the horses run back to them.

I find it all comical after all the posts (here and elsewhere) about the high numbers a couple of the horses in the race had turned in last out.

And here I am thinking that JUICE was supposed to be consistent.

CSC 02-28-2009 05:15 PM

Obvious question is who looks better in the Florida Derby assuming that the first 2 finishers go to the Florida Derby.

Whoever said anything about juice?

A suspected "juiced" horse is technically supposed to explode in one race or sometimes two or three races and just fall apart at the seems totally there after.

The crazy thing about these super trainers - is that they seem to have alchemistic powers and get these huge move-ups and keep horses going strong for many races and sometimes through long (albeit well spaced) campaigns. Dutrow is no doubt one of them.

If you're curious as to how I bet this specific race .. I did bet the big figure horses. Go ahead and mock me about it all you want if it makes you feel any better.

Quality Road. He showed a new gear today, rated close to a fast pace and drew away convincingly. Theregoesjojo looks like a really nice horse, but thus far he's yet to show enough early speed to be a good bet in the Florida Derby at probably shorter odds than today.

How does that make me feel better? The big figure horses also happened to be the 'wipe-out' winners, so don't think that I wasn't, almost, right behind you. I bet Beethoven and still couldn't get it done. Tell you who really had balls: those taking 5:1 on the winner.
