Isn't Denis of Cork unlikely to go? Looks like I was premature in saying Halo Najib was out.

I have a tough time believing that there won't be at least one or two uncertains that are feeling a lot more certain right now. I'll be surprised if Porter doesn't have a filly in here. Why wouldn't you run a horse like Anak Nakal either? What the hell else is he going to do? A 95 Beyer is going to get second in this Derby and possibly first if Big Brown doesn't fire.

wont the bluegrass come back a decent number.....
my calculations have it being in the 99-104 range

ArlJim78 04-12-2008 06:22 PM

question for historians, whats the lowest beyer to win the derby? whatever it is the record may be threatened this year.

altho denis' owner cancelled many of the rooms he had reserved, he didn't sound like the trip was completely out of the question. i'd imagine his horse will ship to churchill and they'll play it by ear.

as for the jones fillies, i now look for eight belles to run on oaks day. and since she's their best, i'd be surprised to see any of his others run on saturday.

as for the bluegrass beyers...i don't know that it matters. i'll be shocked if that race is in any way a key to the derby.

IrishofNDMan 04-13-2008 12:43 PM

Doesn't the owner still def. want to bring Denis of Cork, he just doesn't think he will have the earnings? I think if he can get in he will def. be in the Derby.

SniperSB23 04-13-2008 12:46 PM

Would fourth in the Lexington bump Tomcito ahead of Denis of Cork?

hockey2315 04-13-2008 12:51 PM

Looks like Denis should come in at number 20.

slotdirt 04-13-2008 05:19 PM

Man, there are some horses very high on that list that in a normal year would have absolutely no business making the gate on May 3 in L-ville...

Danzig 04-13-2008 05:24 PM

there are horses every year on the list that have no business going.

denis will squeak in i bet, i doubt proud spell takes up a hole on may 3.

Right, but what have you seen this year from, say, Z Humor, that makes you think that horse is a legitimate Derby horse? Hell, Turf War could be up in the top 10 list yet someone with half a brain figured out the horse doesn't belong in the Derby. I wish others would follow suit.

Then again, it's not like they're keeping someone who has any more of a chance from entering the race.

that's why i said elsehwhere only three year old earnings should count. it's a whole new season for these horses.

SOREHOOF 04-13-2008 06:16 PM

I'd like to see a point system to qualify. But I would use points earned as a 2YO.

cowgirlintexas 04-13-2008 06:58 PM

Just read that the owner of Eight Bells is considering entering her for the Derby. At this point, my $$'s on her.

hockey2315 04-13-2008 06:59 PM

She has absolutely no shot. . . That would really annoy me if they send her.

Coach Pants 04-13-2008 07:04 PM

I'd like to see Denis get 21st.

hockey2315 04-13-2008 07:09 PM

You don't think he has any shot so wouldn't you want him to get in?

SOREHOOF 04-13-2008 07:26 PM

I'd love to see her in! She would have as good of a shot as most of these

lemoncrush 04-13-2008 07:29 PM

I would prefer a new system to decide who gets in as well, although I don't really know what would be fair.
Perhaps graded earnings in races a mile or longer. That would take out the winners of those early 2-yo stakes races.
And then maybe...the top 10 are determined by graded earnings, and after that there's some kind of point system, selection committee, etc..
Who knows.

hockey2315 04-13-2008 07:33 PM

I say 3 year old graded earnings should be worth twice as much as two year old. . . First 15 get in that way. . . Then a "promoter's option" for the last five where a panel of experts chooses. . .

SOREHOOF 04-13-2008 07:37 PM

I think it should go by grade. The 2yo stakes should be just as important. I like 2yo races it gets me going for the Derby all summer long.

SOREHOOF 04-13-2008 07:42 PM

I don't see the Delta Jackpot being worth as much as the BCJuv. Or more than the Wood for that matter.

hockey2315 04-13-2008 07:43 PM

The Delta Jackpot should lose its grade

SOREHOOF 04-13-2008 07:49 PM

I love seeing the big purses, I just don't think it should be a free pass to the Derby. A good 2yo season should be a factor.

hi_im_god 04-13-2008 08:14 PM

name a good horse that will miss the entry gate this year because they lack graded earnings.

let's be sure there's a problem before we replace an easily understood straight forward qualifying system with some rube goldberg contraption.

God, I hope not! got her @ 22-1 in the Oaks future (pool #1) would be a great score the day before the Derby at those odds.

The rules are the rules. Everyone knows them and everyone lives by them. Who gets in gets in. The current system is Rube Goldberg for dummies.

Scav 04-14-2008 04:36 PM

Steve, Anak Nakal is a GO for the Derby per the DRF article on their front page.

Scav 04-14-2008 05:00 PM

So this is the prospected field, with the Lexington possibly causing Bob's Blackjack and Big Truck to get excluded, IF Tomcito/Atoned run 1-2

They can finish:

1. Behindatthebar/Racecar/etc..
2. Atoned
3. Tomcito

and the Visionaire would be in trouble too..
