Oaklawnfan 04-07-2008 12:11 PM

Does anyone know if they will have a Bluegrass - Arkansas Derby double wager this year?

lemoncrush 04-07-2008 12:25 PM

I believe Medjool is also pointing to the Bluegrass.

He and Miner's claim both have proven synthetic form over many of these, which could lead to a good betting race. Especially with Pyro, visionare and Cool Coal Man not needing to run their "A" race due to already having the necessary earnings.
Last year's slow, strangely run BlueGrass was won by Dominican, who won the Rushaway a few weeks earlier. Miner's Claim is taking the same path (although he finished 2nd in the Rushaway this year).

Food for thought.

jcs11204 04-07-2008 01:48 PM

I loved betting the National Pick 4s too, but it seems they really scaled back, or stopped doing alltogether.
I know they used to do a National Pick 4 on Arlington Millions day, along with the Sword Dancer at Saratoga, etc.. They didn't offer it last year, and haven't seen them promote one in quite a long time.

the poster above mentioned it, and has not responded to me asking if it is for sure. i hope there is one, i hit 2 of them, one was with smarty in arkansas and i think i had the cliffs edge keyed in the bluegrass over lion heart.

the other was when powerscourt came back to run in the arlington million, i singled him , i think he beat kittens joy or some other monster that day, because if i remember correctly he was 4-1 and the ticket paid pretty good. i think i also used a filly named Angara in the beverly d, at a decent price on that same ticket.

The Arkansas Derby will be broadcast live on ESPN. It will also be part of a national pick four with the Blue Grass and Commonwealth at Keeneland and the $75,000 Instant Racing at Oaklawn.

Oaklawnfan 04-07-2008 07:53 PM

Pick 4, OMG, that's even better!:D

Oaklawnfan 04-07-2008 10:00 PM

Do you realize how many cheap pick four combinations we can come up with? Any could win.

from the probable fields it looks like it has to be a

4-4-2-2 ticket or something like that, i dont see a single, maybe a shot on elysium fields if he runs in arkansas

I have a wacky notion... Wait until they draw the Commonwealth and Instant Racing fields and THEN start structuring tickets. And singling Elysium Fields, if he runs, 2 weeks after his boiler nearly exploded, would be highly risky. I'm stunned that Tagg is considering it in fact after Robin Smullen's comments post-FL Derby. A heat prostration episode like he had saps a horse. He worked yesterday with Big Truck, so you'll get some answers today. Barclay was a no-show yesterday on ATR so I'll try to get him today.

i thought tagg was considering the coolmore for elysium?

Why is that so interesting?, do you know a horse pointed to the Instant Racing?

Riot 04-08-2008 05:29 PM

Supposed to rain Wed, Thurs, Friday in Lexington, then Saturday cool (50's) and partly cloudy, no rain.

Consider that the 2-yr-old training babies are running in the 10's on the poly yesterday - I doubt it will be different for Saturday, especially with the rain keeping it tight.

was it that bad for Elysium ? your right though, if i ever did single him it would be more with my heart, and not with my head.

Robin Smullen made it sound bad... 105 degree temp... 4 hours to cool out, etc..

Per bloodhorse. (And again, these odds seem completely off to me). I can't imagine playing Pyro at even money in a race which is obviously a prep and his fist race on synthetic.

1.Cool Coal Man, Kent Desormeaux, 4-1
2.Kentucky Bear, Jamie Theriot, 50-1
3.Cowboy Cal, John Velazquez, 15-1
4.Stevil, no rider, 30-1
5.Monba, Edgar Prado, 15-1
6.Big Truck, Eibar Coa, 6-1
7.Pyro, Shaun Bridgmohan, even money
8.Stone Bird, Corey Lanerie, 50-1
9.Medjool, Michael Baze, 30-1
10.Miner’s Claim, Patrick Husbands, 20-1
11.Halo Najib, Garrett Gomez, 15-1
12.Visionaire, Jose Lezcano, 6-1

Kasept 04-09-2008 11:30 AM

Is there a rule this year that says Zito HAS TO DRAW THE RAIL in every prep race?

jms62 04-09-2008 11:36 AM

This has come up as a very nice betting race...

Took the words out of my mouth. That's the first thing I thought when I saw the draw.

As far as Pyro being 1/1........The general public will bet him, regardless of this race as his last Derby prep.

Visionaire piques my interest from post 12.

Battaglia has made my Saturday much more interesting. Pyro at even money (and actually he probably isn't too far off with that) is a joke... there's a Dominican in here, just a matter of finding it...

And jeez, look at the closer that day...just off the top of my head, over half of those are stakes winners -- most of them graded.

Sheesh, what a hell of a race to close the day out.

any reason why Zito is sticking with Desormeaux when he's obviously staying with BIG BROWN for the Derby.

$1188.

i think you mistake his being a good journalist and commenting on a lot of runners for covering the field.

i read that article as an endorsement for some longshots with experience on poly.

JJP 04-10-2008 07:09 AM

Kentucky Bear at 50-1? He could crash the tri at a big price. He was pretty highly regarded going into his last race.

Pyro certainly doesn't have to win this. Due to the upside down nature of the surface, he could very well be off the board.....which would help his price nicely for that little race a few weeks down the road in Louisville. I think Asmissen's main goal here is conditioning.....if he wins great, if not and the horse is set up perfectly for the Derby, I don't think he'll mind at all.

Let's hope that the first 6f doesn't resemble the tortoise race that was last year's running.

I'm unloading if I can get 6/1 on Big Truck.
