Curlin/RTTR

Does anyone know whats up with Curlin ? Was thinking of using in RTTR contest but read he was off Derby Trail now I see hes back . Also have a question about LesGrandTrois, is he nominated for the Derby? and any thoughts on his chances? Really appreciate all the info from this forum, has helped alot in picking winners, Keep up the good work.

Curlin was never off the Derby Trail. . . I know the RTTR site had the news of him going to Asmussen under their "off the derby trail" section for some reason so that's probably what you saw.

Les Grands Trois is nominated to the Triple Crown. I have him in my RTTR stable but I wasn't too impressed with his last race and I was kind of hoping he'd come back in a stakes rather than allowance . . He'll have to make a serious impact in one of the big preps to be considered a contender and to get the earnings to get in. . .

I just picked up Curlin. I went back and forth with him an Law Breaker as I wanted a horse in a race this weekend.

Curlin is running this Saturday against the likes of Teuflesberg and Officer Rocket.

Bobby Frankel was quoted in DRF as sayng that LesGrandTrois is not being pointed for the Ky Derby.

ArlJim78 03-16-2007 02:06 PM

Les Grands Trois is nominated and has raced well his first two starts but to me is a big stretch if you're thinking derby. He has no graded stakes earnings yet, actually never raced in a stakes and also never raced two turns. Not impossible but he is really up against it considering the date.

POINTGIVEN1985 03-16-2007 02:11 PM

i read that he's pointing him to the withers, possibly the same path as bernardini

i thought about picking him up, but opted to go elsewhere.
i picked up flying first class instead.

POINTGIVEN1985 03-16-2007 02:16 PM

Les Grands Trois is more likely to start in the $150,000 Withers Stakes over a mile for 3-year-olds at Aqueduct on April 28, Frankel said on Thursday.

I think that was a good choice...

I noticed that Prado is up instead of Jacinto, which is interesting considering Jacinto has been aboard Flying First Class and is aboard Xchanger this time around.

I thought about him, but I didn't know if he would be another Going Wild.... I did like him though.

I wanted four runners this weekend so all three I picked up are running tomorrow.

berreman150 03-16-2007 03:13 PM

thanks for info . I have a knack for picking wrong horses last year 3 of my first picks were out by the 2nd week this year 2 so far, just quick picked for my husband in the second week and he is ahead of me in the standings. I decided to go with Cobalt Blue and Teuflesberg Stormello . Thinking about adding Lawbreaker and Chelokee, looking for info on Deadly Dealer also have in my notes stumbled out of gate won (fast?) Good Luck to all.

POINTGIVEN1985 03-16-2007 03:18 PM

i think lawbreaker could have a nice future, and he's not that well known yet

I've had Chelokee in my stable since the beginning because he likes Churchill Downs, but we'll see. Deadly Dealer is a nice one, but I remember hearing/reading somewhere that he wasn't being pointed to the derby. Has anyone else heard that?

Well the good thing is you can supplement him to just one of your stables, and leave him out of the others :)

Ya know, cover your bases.

pgardn 03-16-2007 05:18 PM

Sometimes you dont want to pick a horse just because he might be good for the Derby. You want to pick him up because he might be good for you now. This is a fairly silly game and involves a lot of luck but you have got to have horses spread out West, East, and in the middle in order to take advantage of all the points.

I have been successful in getting horses spread out and covering the graded races. They just dont win. If they do I might separate myself from the teaming millions which I figure is the only way to earn a jacket... my goal in life that has eluded me since this damn contest began.

And I made the first page one year right before the April races and then promptly dropped off the face of the earth. The other years all my horses have died (figuratively).

Watch out for DWL this weekend, while i don't like 2 hosses stretching out with speed, curlin and FFC, DWL took down the stakes race today a t 12/1, with a horse who had run 3rd twice to the odds on favorite. I take this as him serving notice.

Buffymommy 03-17-2007 06:19 PM

Looked VERY NICE today. A little lugging, but good.

Coach Pants 03-17-2007 06:20 PM

Absolute monster. Wow.

XIIPointStables 03-17-2007 06:25 PM

Hammer down. Wow.

Antitrust32 03-17-2007 06:28 PM

very nice race by curlin. reminded me a little of smarty jones but more green. officer rocket look TIRED! and still ran a nice second.

ArlJim78 03-17-2007 06:36 PM

All of a sudden the derby trail is starting to look a lot more interesting.

Curlin could not have done better for his second start.

hell yeah Arlington Jim. I am starting to get the FEEEEEEEEEEEEVAR!

POINTGIVEN1985 03-17-2007 07:00 PM

this horse looked really good today but i will question what he beat, a bunch of decent horse at best, but taking nothing away from the winner, second career start and he definitly did it the right way, sat off the pace, rated well and drew off, definitly impressive

umm... he did beat the one and only tuefelsburg (sp?) and the great officer rocket! duh!
:p

mclem10011 03-17-2007 07:19 PM

I thought....

An impressive performance from Curlin, good ride from Robby to get position, then didn't have much to do after that.

So its his fault that no other monsters were entered?? He did what was asked of him, which was to win the race..He did it most impressively at that..I think Flying First Class was an easy bet against at such low odds, having come off a 6 furlong sprint..The same logic was used with Curlin, which is why i watched it and didnt bet it..Lukas' horse is a miler at most, while Curlin looks to be headed for greater things..Cant wait to see how this years derby unflods..Already heatin up

OR got a questionable ride from Q. He got him stuck down the backside and the horse lost momentum, then he had to get him in gear again to late. I thought he was finished on the turn but he did rally late. I think he is a one run horse , he needed Calvin today, definite need to sack Q.

Absolutely! This performance coming in his first start around 2 turns and only his second start ever made the trail a lot more interesting than it would have been if...say....Teuflesberg won again.

sumitas 03-17-2007 09:36 PM

i thought Teuflesberg broke poorly but found a quick opening on the rail. no questioning his heart but will he have his best on Derby day ? doubtful. Cobalt Blue , it was his race, he won like he should have and the Baffert horse now has his foundation. Curlin was very impressive. the 2 at the wire in Tampa looked good with the edge to AGS because of the outside trip.

kentuckyrosesinmay 03-17-2007 09:41 PM

I said it when he broke his maiden, and I will say it again...this is one of the best horses that I have seen. I don't know if this information is out yet, but he was a $57,000 yearling that was sold to Padua and Stonerside for $3.5 million. Nice profit. I hope they go the Preakness route with this horse instead of the Derby route, but I know that this most likely won't happen. He is very rushed to make it to the Derby. If they back off this horse, and give him a little more time, he could turn into the absolute monster that I believe him to be. Nice, nice, nice colt....

You are probably right about this, but if he wins the Arkansas Derby this impressively.....how do you not take a shot in Kentucky?

kentuckyrosesinmay 03-17-2007 09:47 PM

I don't like it at all with just three lifetime starts. I don't believe a horse has ever won the Derby without having a start as a two-year old. He is also still running very greenly.

Showing Up's fifth last year (really sixth with the dead heat of Brother Derek and Jazil) was super impressive off of so few lifetime starts.

I am sure everyone would agree that going 10f in a G1 against 19 other horses is not exactly the ideal spot for a colt's 4th lifetime start. But if (and that is still a big if) he handles 9f and looks solid in his next....I certainly couldn't blame them for taking a shot.

Sorry, I meant Stonerstreet, not Stonerside...Thanks for the correction.

Cannon Shell 03-17-2007 09:54 PM

I dont want to sound like Randall (sorry Randall) but I believe that Curlin will have an awfully short career. Enjoy him now.
