Proof that more than 50% of the horse media is worthless. . . shocker there. Congrats to the Zenyatta fans for being part of the uninformed majority.

That award show was a snapshot of what's wrong with this game. What a sideshow. I should be beaten mercilessly for watching that farce.

Congrats to the big mare.

The Eclipse awards....the gathering of some of the biggest blowhards highlighted by Mary Lou winning the Joan Rivers Award.

OldDog 01-17-2011 09:19 PM

I'm not surprised about Zenyatta getting HOY. This morning I looked at equidaily and saw how many votes she got the previous two years (69 in 2008, 99 in 2009), and it wasn't difficult to imagine her picking up the additional 30-40 votes needed. It's been a love-fest for her this past year, even among some of the most hard-core turf writers who have professed their unabashed love for her in no uncertain terms. Besides, as has been pointed out countless times, the voting is purely subjective. For what it's worth, I'm good with it.

Maybe it's a good thing that TVG is not so accessible; otherwise, too many potential horse racing fans would go screaming into the night after having watched that worse than a jr. high school production.

Nigel in The Replacements - "What a bloody shambles that was."

Under the current incarnation of the Eclipse awards:

Only about 3 or 4 trainers have any prayer of winning
Only 3 or 4 breeders have a prayer of winning
Only a handful of owners have a prayer of winning
Less than 10 jockeys have a chance at winning
A washed up baseball player from the 70's can win the award for apprentice jockey
If you are an American turf horse you can only win if there is no European that shows
You can have a worse year than your last and still win
If you are a sprinter there is really only 1 race you need to win

and now...

If your fans browbeat the entire racing world and you embark on a yearlong publicity campaign (and a companion cupcake schedule), you too can win the biggest award

It might be the first time ever that a horse without a win in an unrestricted race won HOY.
It's not the end of the world, but I think it is disappointing.
