there is a horse in south dakota who has won 29 in a row

The Indomitable DrugS 10-04-2008 09:42 PM

Peppers Pride makes me nostalgic for Hallowed Dreams.

It's amusing to see a horse go 17-for-17 when they parlay a perfect trip into a 1.75 length margin of victory at level weight over a filly who has run Beyers of 73, 73, and 60 in her 3 most recent starts...and was beaten at Ruidoso Downs last time out.

Hallowed Dreams won her first 16 races to start her career - and 23 of her first 24 - she ran 10 triple digit Beyers - including a top of 111.

I remember some mocking her because they kept her in the state of La - the horses who were finishing last in those races could have probably trounced Pepper's Pride.

MISTERGEE 10-04-2008 10:04 PM

hallowed dreams reminds me of happy ticket for some reason didnt she also win quite a few in a row at a nice class level

The Indomitable DrugS 10-04-2008 10:15 PM

I don't believe HD ever won anything more than a Grade 3 stake - if that.

Only listed stakes, never tried graded company.
She hardly ever trailed at any point of call in her career.

she won't go down as the greatest in history, but she is now considered the most consistent. she's carved out her own little tiny place in horse racing lore.

I couldn't agree more. Definately not the best, hats off to Joel Marr though..lol. What a joke, if she was that good, why not have her step up and face something other then what she ran against. A 35K optional claimer??? I mean come on, Personal Ensign, Cigar and Citation did it the right way. This is like a division 3 school winning 17 in row, Cigar and Citation were division 1. If I was Joel I would feel like mud...I can picture him in a bar...My horse won 17 in a row...oh yeah where did she run and who did she beat? New Mexico and a bunch of pigs. Feel proud Joel, really proud.

The Indomitable DrugS 10-04-2008 11:10 PM

You can't fault someone for placing a horse where they belong.

This isn't an impressive accomplishment though. There are fillies and mares who run for high priced claiming tags on the major circuits who would be deserving favorites over her.

By keeping PP racing against New Mexico breds - it's not like they're depriving the sport of much.

Actually I can fault someone for not taking a chance at some point to see how good she actually is. After beating up on her competition for numerous races one would think, hey, lets see if she can step up. Not Joel...I believe he was a little too concerned about this "record"

It's a game.

With strategy, and goals.

That's what the connections wanted today, and that's OK.

You naysayers who think it was just a walk must be p*ssed off you didn't take the easy 20% profit.....??

Look, if Nick Zito had kept Commentator running against straight New York breds for his first 17 races - or John Service had kept Smarty Jones running against Pennsylvania breds for his first 17 races - I would agree that it would be a crime against horse racing because those horses had posted monster figures in dynamite individual performances at the state bred level.

If Peppers Pride had run against Indyanne and Wild Gams yesterday - I think the only serious question would have been whether she would be beaten 12 lengths or 25 lengths.

miraja2 10-05-2008 09:07 AM

If Hang Glide hadn't broken a step slow she would have won by at least a dozen lengths.

Cajungator26 10-05-2008 12:07 PM

You just can't make some people happy. I'm fairly certain that if Joel Marr thought this mare had the talent to win better races, he would try her in one. I would say he's probably happy that she keeps winning and bringing home a paycheck. I'd rather that than the alternative.

The Indomitable DrugS 10-05-2008 12:15 PM

Who the hell is Joel Marr anyway?

Indian Charlie 10-05-2008 12:23 PM

Can we move this discussion to the Virginia Derby thread?

I've said at least twice in this thread that they've done a good job earning A LOT of money with a very mediocre horse. However, you and the rest of the pretty horsey people have completely missed the boat on what the other side of the arguement is. It's fine, but spare me your first sentence nonsense.

I wasn't talking to you, Jay. Thanks, though.

The Indomitable DrugS 10-05-2008 07:26 PM

For those of you who might have liked to see....but missed.

I guess it's the Zia Park race feed, or something. But, her race is there in full. And a bit more.

And here's a tribute from a Peppers Pride fan. I'm usually not big on YouTube tributes, but since I haven't seen too much of Peppers Pride to date I found it nice to watch:

I wouldn't say I'm an idiot, nor did a say I was embarassed for her. All I am saying is she obviously has some talent, take a chance and face some better horses. So a 35K optional claimer is a "winnable spot" for a mare that has one 16 in a row??? Please. Once he got to a certain point he was more concerned about running her in races she couldn't lose instead of running against better competition and gauging how much talent she actually has.

can't say i blame the guy for the approach he took, it certainly paid off for him. maybe now they'll shoot a bit higher. or maybe not. who cares really? it's now a relatively meaningless record, much like most records.
a new 10f grass record was set the other day. quick, who previously held the record. can anyone answer that without looking it up?? other than btw that is...that guy remembers everything!

Hickory Hill Hoff 10-06-2008 04:58 PM

Yeah, what Steve said! :p

Very informative... I especially like Gary West's piece with Asmussen commenting positively about this accomplishment. Everyone should celebrate this feat as triumph for thoroughbred racing. Kudos to Peppers Pride and her connections!
