What makes you think the original decision to suspend him wasn't about money? He made the comments and there was a huge outcry from a vocal minority including GLAAD demanding that Robertson be reprimanded. I think A&E was worried about a boycott, so they suspended him. After they suspended him, there was a much bigger outcry from other groups such as conservative groups. A&E got about 10x more complaints over the suspension than over the comments Robertson made in the interview. A&E was threatened with boycotts over the suspension. So they decided to reverse their decision.

I think both decisions were about money.
