I heard that in the telecast ... And I felt their confidence---the fastest and most impressive Derby prep at the distance so far ...

Anyone else catch where Donna Brothers held up a rather large chunk of tire from the track surface. Yikes:eek:

Im pretty new but i agree to me SA derby was the best prep race ive seen so far. They were saying on hrtv that colonel john came home in 35 seconds which seems pretty quick.right?what do i know but john and pyro "looked" the best 2 me so far.

You are a sport ...
I just read elsewhere that the Wood was the second slowest in history---effing dismal ...
Pity that Zenyatta is not three--she certainly would not be a toss ...
The two mentioned above have their unique attractiveness, as does Pyro, especially if he is dominant next out ...
I am looking for something that will stay on--the only proven stayer of the lot is the much maligned Tomcito, which I remain mildly interested in for at least a clunk up position ...

off Poly

Zenyatta and Tiago seemed to do just fine first start off poly today, so did Heatseeker and Circular Quay at the Fair Grounds Poly did pretty well.

again, why is everyone speaking of Tiago like he's never run on dirt before!! lol. He won the SA Derby on dirt and finished 3rd by 5 lengths to Curlin and Rags in the Belmont. What question mark was there for him? At worst he was going to run maybe the same as on synthetic.

slotdirt 04-05-2008 08:54 PM

All's I know is that Colonel John was very impressive and pedigree-wise, the horse should run any distance that races are carded. Definitely had some traffic trouble, but no excuses and got it done. Not sure what happened with El Gato Malo.

I just don't think he's good enough. His 99 Beyer was earned with a dream setup, and today he moved early and wide, but that was it, nothing else left.

Colonel John meanwhile waited to make his move, then came out and just wore down the pacemakers. He was the only horse to close in the race. Not bad. Does he handle the dirt? That is the next question.

Si, Tiznow /xTurkoman

hockey2315 04-06-2008 12:05 AM

I think Colonel John has a tricky pedigree to figure out how he'll like the surface switch. Tiznow/Turkoman is a little turfy.

Not really from the turf perspective, wasn't Point Given out of a Turkoman mare?

Tiznow hasn been an ok turf sire, nothing to write home about, his horses have really taken to the synethics though.

Watch Harty go and work this horse like 57.2 right before the Derby, like 3 days before.....

What?? That's the weirdest take I've seen. Tiznow and Turkoman were both dirt horses and nothing else. Several Turkomans ended up on turf because there weren't dirt races long enough for them to show their best. I haven't seen a major winner by Tiznow on turf - Folklore, Tiz Wonderful, Slew Tizzy's, Bear Now, all dirt SWs.

Hello lostcode,

Just wondering if you think Fairgrounds is polytrack because it isn't

lostcode 04-06-2008 08:11 AM

yes

I meant to say that Circular Quay won at the Fairgrounds when he got off Poly. What I'm seeing is that these horses are improving off the poly. Trainers like Mark Casse and John Shirreefs have been saying for the past 2 or three months that the poly horses are going to be fitter. Now again it's horse racing, not every horse is going to improve or like both surfaces. That's why we watch the races.....and bet on them.
