There was another insanely fast Southern Cal sprinter from a few years ago. I can't remember his name for the life of me though or who trained him.

Since he never ran a lick, he's not on this list. What did he ever show to give a hit of stardom?

One could say the same thing about Bag.

Bag broke his maiden in 1:08 and change in a runaway. Did TGM ever break his maiden? Bag looked like he could be any kind after that race.

So now all we need is a flashy maiden win? Gonna be a long thread.

His Norfolk and BC Juvenile efforts kinda narrowed down what kind he was going to be...

Still a blank but thank you guys for trying.

He was within the last four years and he only sprinted. He'd show up, run a couple of really fast allowances and then be on the sidelines again. Maybe Sadler trained him.

Magical Mile, he was a freak of freaks. At least in those two two year old races.

There is one famous member of this board (along with his sidekick bruce) that wants to nominate a horse named High Limit.

He made a fine fox hunter though! :D

How about two runaway winners of the Illinois Derby.....

Greeley's Galaxy and Sweetnorthernsaint.

I also don't remember much happening with Imperialism after his good third in the slop in the Derby.

And I hate to say it, because he was one of my favorites, but Officer might have to be thrown into this mix. It's hard to call a horse a failure that starts 9 times with 6 wins, a second, and a third, and over 800K in earnings. But given what he looked like in his wins, that he didn't train on was truly a disappointment.

He was wide chasing a crazy fast pace in the Derby and was injured.

He only ran one more time - in a very difficult spot - going 10fs off of layoff and injury and he ran a good 2nd in the Travers and that was it.

He also didn't bring a heavy repute into the Wood Memorial.

Remember how hyped Dynever was coming out of GP as a 3yo?

That MoFo may go down as one of the great hangers of all-time. 0-for-9 lifetime record in Gr 1 and Gr 2 stakes.

Did manage a 2nd in the Dubai World Cup and a 3rd in the Breeders Cup Classic ... but some of his defeats in lesser races were the stuff of legend.

Same sire as Perfect Drift ... but PD was like a lion hearted finisher compared to him I think.

Same crop, Johannesburg after winning the BC Belmont Juv beating Officer among others raced twice after that, 2nd to the good filly Rebelline in his 1st start as sophmore and then finished his career with a lacklustre derby effort. He had as brilliant a 2 yr old campaign as a horse I can remember having, however as with some 2 year olds he didn't carry that over to his 3 year old season.

Edit- Actually he raced one more time after the derby and was well beaten, then he was retired.

Dollar Bill made these 2 look like Forego, IMO he was the king of all time hangers.

The Indomitable DrugS 10-21-2009 10:07 AM

Dollar Bill stunk. That horse was never any good IMO.

He wasn't a top 10 2yo from that crop and wasn't a top 10 3yo either IMO.

CSC 10-21-2009 10:19 AM

I don't disagree, but there was certainly a fascination about him and why he was always well bet in the races he was entered in, I believe he was only 6-1 in the 2001 Final derby odds, second and no worse than 3rd choice to Point Given.

The Indomitable DrugS 10-21-2009 12:05 PM

Everyone made a big deal about a visually obvious trobled trip behind Fifty Stars at the Fair Grounds ... it was in a collapsing race and it was the kind of phony trouble everyone sees and always overrates.

He was also being bet by people who wanted a deep closer because of the hot pace. Monarchos was every bit as well thought of as Point Given until Congaree beat him easily at AQU in the Wood in his stakes debut. The thumping Congaree gave him basically sent his bandwagon fleeing to the troubled sucker horse in Dollar Bill.
