Racing Incident Report
BERIO, which was fractious in the barriers, was slow to begin. After this, BERIO was ridden along to obtain a forward position. Shortly after the start, OSVALDO was checked away from the heels of DANESIS which got its head on the side and shifted out. In the middle stages, WATCH WHAT HAPPENS proved difficult to settle. Near the 700 Metres, OSVALDO became unbalanced when awkwardly placed close to the heels of WATCH WHAT HAPPENS. Passing the 600 Metres, BERIO was taken wider by DUMBARTON ROCK which shifted to the outside of SILVER SUN. WATCH WHAT HAPPENS was held up for clear running until passing the 300 Metres. Over the concluding stages, DANESIS shifted ground outwards under pressure. After the winning post, SYLLABUS and JOYFUL WINNER were severely checked when tightened for room between DUMBARTON ROCK and BERIO (Apprentice T H So) which, after finishing the race, was permitted to shift in by its rider. Apprentice So was advised that although the race had finished, his actions in allowing BERIO to shift in thereby compromising the safety of riders and horses to his inside would not be condoned in future. He was also advised that, at all times, he should show due care and regard to his fellow riders. A veterinary inspection of BERIO after the race did not show any significant findings. BERIO, HOLI RAVIOLI and OSVALDO were sent for sampling.

Jockey Christophe Soumillon

On 28 September 2009, Jockey Christophe Soumillon submitted an application for a Club Jockey's Licence in which he advised his period of availability as being from 6 January 2010 until 27 March 2010, both dates inclusive. The Licensing Committee, at their meeting held on 4 November 2009, granted Christophe Soumillon a Club Jockey's licence for the period as advised by Jockey Soumillon. On 10 November 2009, Jockey Soumillon accepted in writing the Club's offer to ride during the stated period.

On 31 December 2009, Management received a request from Jockey Soumillon, via his manager, to delay the commencement of his Club Jockey's contract until 24 January 2010 as he was required to recuperate after having surgery to have a pin removed from the arm he injured in a race fall in September 2009. Jockey Soumillon advised that he would be assessed by his medical practitioner on or about 16 January 2010 when it was anticipated he would be cleared to resume riding.

Management yesterday received further correspondence from Christophe Soumillon, again via his manager, in which he requested for the termination date of his agreement to ride with the Club to be amended from the previously approved date of 27 March 2010 to 28 February 2010. Jockey Soumillon advised the reason for this request as being that he is required by his retaining stable in France to return to that country so as to commence riding duties on 1 March 2010. This request to significantly vary the period of his licence to ride was received one day after the date his Club Jockey's licence was initially approved to take effect. Also contained within Jockey Soumillon's correspondence was advice that he was now able to commence his agreement to ride with the Club on 16 January 2010, despite advice to the contrary some seven days earlier.

Jockey Soumillon has been licensed by the Club as either a Club Jockey or Stable Retained Jockey on six previous occasions. On four of these six occasions, he has submitted an application for the approved term of the agreement to be terminated prior to the previously approved and committed expiry date.

Having considered the manner in which Jockey Soumillon has repeatedly sought to amend the dates of his currently approved licensing period, the fact that he is not able to fulfil a significant portion of the approved licensing period, the late notification of his requests and his recurrent failure to honour the full term of his licensing periods during previous racing seasons in Hong Kong, the Licensing Committee has, by circulation of paper, today agreed to withdraw  the Club Jockey's Licence previously granted to Christophe Soumillon for the period 6 January 2010 until 27 March 2010, both dates inclusive.

Chadwick breaks apprentice record to take 70 winners within 13 months

The Club held a graduation ceremony for apprentice jockey Matthew Chadwick at Sha Tin Racecourse today (10 January), after he rode his 70th winner in Hong Kong on board Multiglory in Race 2. Executive Director of Racing William A Nader presented Chadwick with a silver-gilt dish, mini-sash and cap.

Chadwick has reached the 70-winner graduation benchmark in just 12 months and 3 weeks - the fastest in Hong Kong's racing history.

After enrolling in the HKJC's racing trainee programme in 2004 and receiving basic riding training in Hong Kong and Australia, Chadwick, now 19, had his first racing experience while he was indentured to trainer Maryann Thexton on Australia's Gold Coast. Between his first competitive ride there on 17 May 2008 and his last on 24 November of that year, he notched up a total of 26 winners.

Chadwick returned to Hong Kong shortly afterwards and was licensed to begin his Hong Kong career on 15 December 2008, attached to the Tony Cruz stable. On his very first riding day, 20 December, he scored his debut Hong Kong victory on board O'Reilly Rally. He went on to capture a total of 43 winners between then and the end of the season, a tally that was earned him 4th place in the jockeys' premiership and the title of Champion Apprentice Jockey 2008/09.

His maiden success in pattern races came on 1 October 2009 when he rode Egyptian Ra to victory in the National Day Cup, a Hong Kong Group 3 event. On 1 January 2010, Chadwick partnered Egyptian Ra to land the Chinese Club Challenge Cup - his second victory in local pattern races.

Chadwick was also nominated as one of the three Hong Kong representatives in the Cathay Pacific International Jockeys' Championship in December 2009.

Oh wow Luckyme just won the 4th! That's amazing... he has 4 HK wins and they were all in the 2006 / 2007 season.

Nice!

Chadwick won the first two races...

I'm standing by Soviet Pearl in the 10th. Moonwalk is in the 9th but I've been a Billion fan for a long time and hope he does well. Maybe I've lost my mind but the longshot I like in this one is Osvaldo. :$:

19 January 2010

Permission has been granted for Jockeys Felix Coetzee and Christophe Soumillon to ride SUPER PISTACHIO and BEAUTY FLASH respectively, both horses being trained by Tony Cruz, in the Mercedes-Benz Hong Kong Classic Mile (HK Group 1) scheduled to be conducted at Sha Tin Racecourse on Sunday, 24 January 2010.

Mr Cruz has provided a written undertaking on behalf of owners Mr Eugene Chuang Yue Chien (SUPER PISTACHIO) and Mr Kwok Siu Ming (BEAUTY FLASH) that both Jockeys Coetzee and Soumillon have also accepted the engagements on the respective horse in the Mercedes-Benz Hong Kong Derby Trial (HK Group 2, Sha Tin, 16 February 2010) and the Mercedes-Benz Hong Kong Derby (HK Group 1, Sha Tin, 14 March 2010), provided the horses are included in the field for those races. I cannot divulge the particulars but a small wager on Super Pistachio may pay very well. Or not.

my miss storm cat 01-22-2010 12:02 AM

Good for you! He's an interesting horse and I'm glad you're not fooled by that first HK start where he was 11th.

Nutty Boy :p was originally Westphalia (you remember him... I know you do) and was trained by AOB.

He's been around... the G1 Prix du Jockey Club (he was 3rd), G1 Prix Jean Prat, the G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains (3rd), the G3 Prix de Fountainbleu (2nd), the BC (he was 2nd to Donativum two years ago in the Juvy Turf), the Curragh, Doncaster... he's got some serious frequent flyer miles!

If you look at his last barrier trial (Jan 5th)... look!

Very nice!

Should be at big fat odds so good luck to you my dear. I don't think Tony would have Felix riding him if he didn't have a nice shot.

I'll post my pick when I can think straight. Too many here to make a case for.

Need to go watch the replay of Mister Horse again.:o He's entered in R4 and has Brett up again... that name. I love that name! :D

Irian makes his first start in R7. Should be great!

Good luck to Kimberley in R1 (let's hear it for the Class 5 horses!), one of the only girls in HK and to Sound of Silence... one of my favorite cellar dwellers. :)

my miss storm cat 01-22-2010 12:20 PM

Forgot to mention that Straight Forward (Chadwick has the mount...) is the former AOB-trained Freemantle.

Small world!

my miss storm cat 01-23-2010 02:54 PM

I'd love to see Brave Kid (moves up to Class 2) stay undefeated (R10).

Retired... Ace of Spades (the former Omerta, SAF). He was 12th 5 times, 14th twice and 5th once. Maybe this will be better for him.

Natural Echo (63 starts... his first HK race was June of 2002), Pachinko (2 wins) , Perfect Match (only 1 HK win) and Hot Sun (ditto) were all retired too.

Thanks for the memories, boys. :tro:

I'm wondering if Algarve might be the kinda forgotten horse in the Mile (?). I'd take a chance... he'll be at big odds.

Might be the closest I come to posting a pick. I just want to watch it... I'll cheer for whoever wins but yeah this one could be a surprise.

Good luck to anyone playing and come home safe, kids.

Racing Incident Report
CHEERFUL DELIGHTS was slow to begin. From a wide draw, MOONWALK was taken across behind runners shortly after the start. Approaching the 1300 Metres, WHITE JADE was restrained away from the heels of BEAUTY FLASH (C Soumillon) which shifted in when not clear. C Soumillon was severely reprimanded and advised to ensure he is sufficiently clear when shifting ground in similar circumstances. Inside the 100 Metres, AMIGO, which had a tendency to lay in, shifted in slightly, resulting in CERISE CHERRY being steadied when crowded onto the hindquarters of ALGARVE which was hampered as a consequence. For the major part of the race, BEAUTY LEGEND travelled wide and without cover. When questioned, F Coetzee (SUPER PISTACHIO) stated that it had been anticipated that STRAIGHT FORWARD would lead the race and he was instructed to obtain a position behind that horse if possible. He said SUPER PISTACHIO, which became stirred up behind the barriers, did not show natural speed in the early stages. He said he did consider riding SUPER PISTACHIO along aggressively after the start to obtain a forward position as instructed, however, he felt that had he done this, the horse would not be able to finish off the race. He said for this reason SUPER PISTACHIO raced further back in the field than had been intended. He did say however that when ridden in this manner, SUPER PISTACHIO finished off the race well. When questioned, M Chadwick stated that he had been instructed to lead on STRAIGHT FORWARD if possible, however, if the pace was fast in the early stages, he should take a sit behind the speed. He said STRAIGHT FORWARD began awkwardly and then did not show the pace that he anticipated. He added that STRAIGHT FORWARD hung in in the early stages and when he observed BEAUTY FLASH and WHITE JADE improving to his outside, he allowed those horses to cross rather than make use of STRAIGHT FORWARD to lead. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of ALGARVE, B Prebble stated that he was surprised in the early stages of the race that the horse did not travel well enough to be able to take up a slightly more forward position. He said it had been hoped that ALGARVE would be able to race a little closer than it was obliged to today. He said irrespective of this, he was able to follow the eventual runner-up, CHATER WAY, throughout the race and that horse was able to draw a margin on ALGARVE in the early part of the Straight. He said, in his opinion, ALGARVE did not show the turn of foot that it had in its previous races and stayed on only one-paced in the run to the line. A veterinary inspection of WHITE JADE after the race did not show any significant findings. BEAUTY FLASH and CHATER WAY were sent for sampling.

A six degrees of separation moment... Good luck to Sugar on Top, the former Mr. Jinky. He was trained by a Russell Cameron in NZ... am I crazy or isn't that who had Bulldozer / Borugino for a while after he left HK(?).

Anyway zero HK wins... the best he's ever done was 4th. He's in R1 with Douggie up (!).

To him and (good luck to) to 10 year old Rising Win who is making his 83rd start. (He's rated 14 which I think is officially the lowest I've ever seen, poor guy). 5 wins starting in 2003... isn't it's time to retire this gentleman?

Come home safe.

Bullish Win :) is a standby starter in R5.

Happy Zero to miss the Stewards Cup, Medic Power misses the Centenary Sprint Cup and Chui stood down...

Retired... Best Power and Rainbow Star.
