Let's not take ourselves to seriously though shall we. My $50 is not going to distort any win pools, taking advantage of all the bettors in America. If you follow the logic presented, any of the connected people on this board who get inside tips on live horses, which happens all the time, and who do not immediately share with the group are guilty of the same thing.

I'm also pretty certain that the percentage of people on this board who have *never* checked out the Wizard's picks, or a Closer Look which oh that's right you pay for... is close to zero, so spare me the holier than thou line

End of Story

you said in your confidential story that we should "feel free to agree that I'm a complete dumbass".

but as soon as anyone said anything critical you got all touchy and offended.
what did you expect?

anonymous 05-08-2008 11:45 AM

What did I expect.....?

For the group to probably say, yeh that was not smart, but thanks for the heads up.......maybe share some similar experiences

but that's cool....thanks for the effort, now GFY... got it.......:D

I will admit, I called one of those numbers for football once and realized it was a scam within minutes. As far as Horse Racing goes, I love to handicap (even though I suck at it most of the time). But the feeling you get when you dope out a race and nail it is tremendous. By getting picks would just cheapen something that I like love to do.

ArlJim78 05-08-2008 12:10 PM

purchasing race analysis (the wizard or whatever) as an adjunct to your own handicapping is one thing. anyone purporting to offer big winnings and blockbuster scores should be avoided. as someone mentioned, the selections area on Dt is probably better than most of the touts, and the price is right!

wtf is fair
When I put my money on a horse, it is my desire to win....am I greedy because of that desire? ...if so, then so be it.
By attending workouts and then betting on the basis of information that others don't have, am I cheating the rest of ya?...if so, then so be it.

Generally speaking people bet on horses hoping to make money...the basis for whom they choose to wager upon may come from tip sheets...their own handicapping...touts...stable connections....lucky numbers...favorite colors.....favorite jockeys....cause the horse took a dump in the paddock....ect ect. None of these systems are fool proof.
What is the big deal if someone wants to pay for selections...

no problem with the greed part, or desire to make money or using hard work to obtain an edge over others.
paying for selections that are obtained by paying people for inside information seems sleazy and not legit.

I guess I just don't know many people that would fall for this. And in my opinion if a tout was any good, they could make enough money betting on their own, that they don't need to do the whole tout thing.

The whole premise of this thread seems odd to me.

Yeah, if you are actually making money in the long run then you'll make more by keeping your mouth shut and improving your payouts. The only reason to sell picks is if you are losing in the long run and hope someone latches on when you have a hot streak and will continue to pay for your picks.

I don't think it is cheating to pay for those picks. Just laziness and stupidity.

Payson Dave 05-08-2008 12:50 PM

I read it that; Anonymous fell for a scam...lost some money and is alerting others to avoid his/her mistake....the scumbag here is the one selling the bogus info...anonymous is simply the (hopefully now smarter) mark

Antitrust32 05-08-2008 01:14 PM

Dave,

Speaking of watching workouts... Remember that horse you gave me on Travers day last year.. a maiden (that you saw workout) who was supposed to be a longshot but went off as like a co-favorite and won the race in a tight finish and I think maybe survived an inquiry..

Do you know what happened to that horse? I cant remember his name for the life of me except that he was the 12 horse I think.

He went on to win a G3 a few months later I think. Now a Victor or something like that. 15-1 morning line, went off at 5-2.

I'll look at my records/notes from last year and get back to ya with a name...not sure what happened to the horse

It was definitely Now a Victor. Won the Discovery and ran 2nd in the Pegasus. Don't think he's run since.

Payson Dave 05-08-2008 01:22 PM

Now A Victor

sumitas 05-08-2008 01:31 PM

I endorse the selections board on Derbytrail.

Antitrust32 05-08-2008 01:49 PM

Thanks guys, definatly Now A Victor..... was so hoping for 10-1 or better Dave on that day!! I hope he comes back.

I think this is the point that really should get across. If someone is 'selling picks,' I take that as they aren't very good. If they were good picks, they probably wouldn't be for sale! They wouldn't be given out.... right BTW?

I'm not sure I would completely agree with this. The Wizard's sheet is pretty good and he sells his opinion. I would agree that most touts you see out there, obviously John Piesen comes to mind, are only worth paying if you could book their opinions, but there are people getting paid for their opinions that have something to offer. I think a lot of you would be surprised to know how many supposed sharp guys sell their opinions privately.

I do some handicapping shows, I'm doing Sundays at NYRA now, so I fall under the category of getting paid for my opinion....at least sometimes. I do it because I like it, I think it promotes the game in a postive way, and because I get paid. I also win money betting.....but not always enough to pay all my bills.

Anonymous, I really don't think it's very right of people to be so belittling in this thread, but then again, almost every thread with the tiniest shred of controversy heads down a bad road, so...yeah. Anyway, thank you for admitting what you did and trying to warn people.

blackthroatedwind 05-08-2008 11:23 PM

I laughed.

anonymous 05-09-2008 07:15 AM

There may have been some redeeming social value..

that emerged in the thread after we worked through the group fighting their hangovers....

unfortunately not my last bad handicapping decision, but learned a lesson, pure con artistry... thx

Right.

Also, there are other motivations in life besides money. Fame, for example. Some people write books with good info, presumably because they enjoy being (somewhat) famous more than the incremental extra money they could make by keeping the info private. I'm guessing (but could be totally wrong) that BTW enjoys the recognition that comes from having his face and opinions out in front of the racing public.

Some years ago Stanford Wong was alerted to a piece of information about a game in Biloxi that had an expected return of more than $1000/hr. With smaller bets, the game could have been milked indefinitely. Instead of maximizing his own win from the game, Wong put the info in his newsletter. Wong was in the business of selling good information, and he always felt his first obligation was to his customers. As a result, the game was swarmed by eager pros, and the game was shut down a day or two later. The estimated win by the players was estimated at $180K, but only a small part of that was Wong's own win. You can read about it on p.5 of this link:

http://www.conjelco.com/IG/IG4.pdf "Professional Sic Bo".

It's a good example of someone selling info that's worthwhile.
