$5 million for Court Vision is a real head scratcher.

I hope for their sake he works out better than Adagio.

The Bid 01-29-2008 12:52 PM

Adagio, Pshew. What a stinker.

I do like Frost Giant

Another great purchase.

They've had a couple terrific purchases, no doubt, but they get a lot more publicity than the disasters.

Great game.....but a brutal game.

The Bid 01-29-2008 01:00 PM

Ive always thought if you really know what you are doing there is no need to pay premium for any horse. If you are confident in what you are doing, how you are buying, and who you are dealing with, why would you want to pay top dollar?

$5mm doesn't seem too unreasonable. Horse probably stands for 10k if they retire him today, that's about a $3mm value right now (100 mares a year X 3 years) Hey, I give them credit for building a partnership up to the level where they can get a Derby starter or a BC winner.

I just can never, ever forgive the A One Rocket debacle.

blackthroatedwind 01-29-2008 01:06 PM

I have a hard time believing that horse could get paid $10K for 100 covers.

And, I'm not quite sure the horse business will be unaffected by a recession.

The Bid 01-29-2008 01:08 PM

Hed stand for 5k if he retired right now and stayed in Kentucky. Hes like a Mr Sekiguchi at this point.

The only saver is Winstar can support him.

He would also get very few decent mares. The oversaturated stallion market wouldnt accept an unproven horse like this for 10k. Not in kentucky

100 is doubtful, but that's what they calculate off of.

FYI, my $10k estimation is based off of The Cliff's Edge who stands for that amount, who has a similar pedigree and only somewhat more accomplished (despite being certainly faster).

Only somewhat? He won the Blue Grass, was second in the Travers, and third in the JCGC ( which, for whatever it's worth, he would have won if he didn't break his leg ).

I think he was more than somewhat more accomplished.

I left that softball for you.....and I didn't want to research on exact races he won.

I think the bottom side of Court Vision is what has people all up in arms and gaga

Cliff's Edge covered 55 mares in 2007, his third year at stud. That likely means less than 40 live foals. To count on 100 a year for 3 years with a questionable stallion prospect doesn't seem very realistic.

slotdirt 01-29-2008 02:19 PM

I don't have the link in front of me, but Steve Haskin lists Court Vision as his #1 Derby prospect at this point on the Derby Trail. I'm not disagreeing or agreeing, just stating that fact.

I seriously doubt finishing third in the JCGC did anything for his stud career (although i don't disagree he was best, I bet him in that race). His second in the Travers was very good, but again, that doesn't add all that much to his stallion value (and yes... I bet him in that race too.) That leaves the Blue Grass... while a very important race, hasn't been a stallion producer either.

You gotta remember who we're dealing with in the breeding industry... bloodlines mean just as much as race accomplishments.

Agreed, however that's what I've been told the formula is.

We all know Haskin has an affinity for slow horses.

The Cliff's Edge is by the same sire - but has a MUCH inferior female family.

However, he was also MUCH more horse than CV.

Based off that alone - I think it's fair to say Haskin couldn't handicap his way out of a paper bag.

You sure about that?

To this point in their career they have very similar credentials. Cliff's Edge didn't run a real fast race at 2 either despite two graded stakes wins.

I stand by my $10k stud fee assessment on Court Vision.

You are wrong about that. The Cliff's edge got a 101 Beyer in his second to last 2yo start - and a 94 Beyer in his final start - while giving weight all around and racing wide. Both graded stakes wins.

He was already Jerry Brown's Derby horse at this point I believe.

It's all about consistancy....and Phil's just trying to keep all of his posts in this thread of equal inaccuracy.

If the Beyers were that high I stand corrected, I remembered them both being below 90.

I'm trying hard.

But my point remains the same: Court Vision would be a $10k sire if he retired today.

He was also the morning line favorite for the Derby. Didn't he lose a shoe or two in the Derby as well?

He still ran better than my pick (Master David) who is STILL trying to finish that race.

He's not only still trying to finish THAT race.....I think he's still trying to finish a $35K claimer at Delta.

His 101 Beyer in the Iroquios was the highest ever earned in the history of that race.

Harlan's Holiday's 99 is 2nd. Exploit's 98 is 3rd.

I know that there's absolutely zero correlation but interesting that two of the highest ML favorites in the history of the Derby topped the list.

The Bid 01-29-2008 03:39 PM

I could be wrong but I believe Master David was sold to South American interests for 35k. May have been Puerto Rico, I dont recall. Whatever it was its a far cry from lexington.

The Indomitable DrugS 01-29-2008 03:43 PM

One of his old owners is a windchime salesman.
