Wow Drugs! Your posts are awesome! You should have a horse history site like Colin's Ghost! Are you in California? I'd love to get together with you and my buddies at Santa Anita and talk racing history if you are?

I was going over some past performances of triple crown races from the old days and found a very interesting horse in the 1911 Preakness.

The 3-year-old black gelding was listed as being sired by either Hamburg or Sandringham. Hamburg was a great sire - Sandringham was described as "a great roaring brute" and supposedly was a big flop at stud. I can't say I've ever seen a horse with two sires listed before.

It would have been cool had he won the Preakness - but The Nigg.er had an unfortunate habit of hanging .. he was in contention and finished 3rd that day.

Another odd thing - I never even realized they had a horse track in Jacksonville Florida. I guess in 1911 they did. It's not listed in the track abreviations in the book "Champions" - so no champions ever ran there anyway.

After running 3rd in the Preakness in 1911 - this horse later won the Toronto Cup at 10fs in track record time and was called "one of the best horses to ever race in Canada" by the racing press. To the best of my knowledge - no stakes race was ever named to honor this most unique horse. Perhaps if horse racing ever returns to Jacksonville Florida ... that might change.

Jacksonville was horse racing from 1909 to 1911:

Not much on the web about the track.
I did find a reference that Sherrill Ward, Forego's trainer was born near the track in 1911. (Legends book on Forego, page 41)
