I have a feeling if Dryfly continues on in this manner, Lynn Whiting is going to become the "feel good" humble old school trainer in all the Derby human interest stories a la Hal Wiggins and the goon that trains General Quarters.

That said, he's quitely done well with many 3yos over the years that came from humble origins (ie Lil E. Tee, Phantom On Tour, At The Threshold, Big Pistol).

I always cry after those heart warming features.. Especially when they show the trainer so emotional about there horsey.

True ... but at least three of those horses started off with promising races for other trainers.

Not sure about Big Pistol.

It's made all four career starts for the same owner-trainer.

He was a 140K FT Calder 2yo RNA.

DRF says that he was privately purchased on Whiting's recommendation. Must have been before he started.
