How can you possibly say Avenging Spirit ran a good race?

Because I know he did. I know the horse is very well thought of and I didn't need anyone to tell me he ran well in his first start. He broke fair showed nice early speed which will not be his trade mark in the future was green as heck down the lane and still managed to out finish the rest that hadn't made a run. perhaps you should go to the replay and watch that horses stride? he isnt a sprinter and will be better going longer.

hockey2315 01-10-2010 02:22 PM

I don't care how well thought of the horse is. . . Nothing about his run backed up all the hype. Clearly your expectations prior to the race are clouding your ability to objectively evaluate his performance. The winner couldn't have accelerated away from AS any easier and, no matter how hard he tried to blow it for second, none of those horses were even good enough to clunk up and pass him.

Maybe whatever injuries he has struggled with came back to haunt him in the stretch, but that certainly doesn't bode well for his future.

If biggest hype horse ran a 105 in his second and this horse ran 17 lengths behind in his first which is what a 75 BSF then I think it was a very good first try.

No thanks on any Forest Camp being a factor on the first Saturday of May. I might even rather have a future bet on a Dixie Union horse.

Yes he is. Cant wait to see him develop. This could be one we will be talking about for a long, long time.

His major goal is the Whitney at Saratoga ... but Gary Contessa doesn't want to rush him by pushing him into the Suburban at Belmont ... so the Cornhusker will be his prep for the Whitney ... then ultimately the BC Classic.

In his last start ... Mayan King ran a mile at Belmont in the same time that Silver Train ran the Met Mile the following day.

Anyone in the Midwest should definitely plan to be there ... you'll see a real racehorse whose name will be on everyone's lips this Fall ... and you'll be able to bet on as dead-sure a certainty as there is in horse racing.

Now if someone will just explain to me what a cornhusk is ...

Good lord.....

3rd place finisher might be ok too. He will need distance and probably turf.

More like a 60 Freddy.

The final margin was over 17 lengths.

How in the hell did that horse take so much money? Tapit's are very low percentage on debut ... and the dam was a turf marathoner.

Was not a debut I believe but a second start.

He's talking about the 2nd place finisher.

The winner actually opened up pretty short in his debut at Saratoga if I remember correctly. . . The race was so loaded, though, that his odds had to go high when the pools filled out.

The winner ran an absolutely mind-boggling race when 3rd in his debut at Saratoga.

StoneGossard did a nice write-up on him at his blog.

I'll take my chances that Avenging Spirit is a good horse and he showed why he was heavily bet. Wow, a first time starter, who was studdish in the paddock and acted up, tired badly from chasing a speed horse that ran a monsterous race. That's never happened before.

The Indomitable DrugS 01-11-2010 12:55 PM

I don't disagree. He should improve a whole lot. Certainly could be a good horse.

The mother was a nice closing turf stayer .. and Tapit's often seem to move plenty forward off of their debut.

Tapit's debuters are a combined 5-for-86, his best ones like Carless Jewel and Stardom Bound both got beat on debut.

Even without getting into circumstances - it's impressive that Avenging Spirt was good enough to run a Beyer in the low 60's on debut.

I'd have been a lot more excited if he was 30/1 instead of 3/1.

Speaking of Avenging Spirit, where has King Glorious been lately?

Indian Charlie 01-11-2010 04:27 PM

Just read for 8550 that he's going the Whirlaway - Gotham - Wood - Derby route.
