the horse is just one of those favorites that has to have absolutely everything go their way or they throw in the towel.

I think the main reason for this is the number of horses and the number of true contenders in the race. You can easily make a case that only 3 horses had a shot in this race for win and place. A 3x3 x All 1.00 tri cost 30 bucks not alot for a low risk wager. As far as the Super a 3 x 3 x All x All cost 120 for a buck and 12.00 for a dime. I'm sure a lot of Dime players canibalized the pot. IMHO Supers are paying way less since dime Supers came into play of course I will get an argument but have no way of backing up my claim since I don't have the data to compare. It is simply my observation.

the one thing you don't get with dimes is the *ALL* payoffs, that you used to see often. There are still monster payoffs just not as often. But racing is helped with the dimes. They get more handle and therefore more percentages. People wouldn't try if they had to spend the $24 everytime
