Yea, everyone is excited!!!

Lock of the weekend, Sayaprayerforme (R9)

King and King will be at big, fat odds... Ace Armada and Big Easy to hit the board too (okay maybe beat him home but whatever. I love him).

Grant's Success takes Punter's Way Sprint 24 Aug 2008

Craig Brennan

Grant’s Success broke through for a well deserved victory when successful in the $125,000 Punters’ Way Sprint over 1200m on Sunday.

And in doing so, the gelding landed a betting plunge firming into $19 at the finish.

Ridden by Robbie Fradd, Grant’s Success overpowered his rivals in the straight to score by one-and-three-quarter lengths over Chevron (Saimee Jumaat) with Ace And Aces (Danny Beasley) a head away third.

A solid pace was carved out in the early stages of the race with Future Baby (Mohd Zaki) leading from Ace And Aces with Silver Profesor (Mark Ewe) and Grant’s Success in close attendance.

This quartet held sway as the field made their way to the home turn where Ace And Aces quickly moved to Future Baby under a strong hold.

Ace And Aces looked to have the measure of his rivals with 200m to run, however the gelding could not withstand the finishing burst of the winner who came out past the centre of the track with his run.

Chevron ran on strongly towards the inside while Recast (Din Azis) was noticed getting to the line strongly to finish fourth.

Winning trainer Michael Clements explained that he had changed Grant’s Success’ racing pattern by giving him more time between his races.

“He seems to be thriving having a good break between his races,” said Clements. “He’s appreciating having between four and five weeks between his runs.

“The way he’s racing I think he can handle an extra ground but I’ll see he how does in getting over this run before I decide what to do with him.

“But the main thing I’ll do is continue to race him sparingly.”

While Clements is considering stepping Grant’s Success up in distance, Fradd believes the six-year-old is better suited being kept to the 1200m trip.

“They go at a nic gallop for him over 1200m,” said Fradd. “I think they just go at that slightly steadier pace over 1400m which wouldn’t play into his hands.”

Fradd said he had concerns with the track conditions prior to the race but was able to get out wider into the better going.

“I thought he may have been a problem on the soft ground, but we got out wide and he finished the race off strongly,” said Fradd.

“I was following Ace And Aces and just struggling a little, but when I switched him out he was OK.

“He had no weight on his back and that certainly helped him against some of those higher weighted horses.”

Grant’s Success is a six-year-old son of Spinning World from the What A Guest mare Lady Guest. Sunday’s victory was his seventh in 27 starts and took his prizemoney to around the $490,000 mark.

Runner-up Chevron was responsible for an encouraging first-up effort that delighted jockey Saimee.

“It was a very good effort considering he raced in the worst part of the track and I couldn’t get out where I needed to be,” said Saimee.

“He’s going to get benefit from the run.”

Recast hit the line well and jockey Din Azis said the run was excellent.

“He hit the line very well,” said Din Azis. “He carried plenty of weight and to run the way he did on the wet track was certainly a good run.”

Lim’s Fighter (Noel Callow) finished sixth and trainer John Meagher wasn’t too disappointed with the run.

“He was off the bit all the way and chasing,” said Meagher. “He wasn’t handling the ground and is only going to get benefit from the run.

“He’ll be better off on a firmer track and with a bit more ground.”

Okay well my kids didn't do that well last time and I know Singapore isn't exactly the most popular place to follow BUT, BUT, BUT....

Just an incredible field.

The Hornet is a seriously nice horse but he's coming back from a break so not sure....

War horn (swoon) scratched.

Good luck to King and King, Ace Armada, Chevron and My Royal Captain.

As far as who actually wins here I'm thinking it's between Lim's Fighter, Mr. Line and Ace Armada.

Come home safe good boys. Hope War Horn is alright...

I'm assuming Top Spin is the favorite.....

Good luck to my sentimental favorite, King and King, who I doubt hits the board.

The Hornet / Chevron / Itmaybeyou or Recast

Come home safe.

Chevron salutes in Raffles Cup 09 Nov 2008

Craig Brennan

Consistent performer Chevron claimed his first Group 1 success when he took out the $500,000 Raffles Cup over 1800m on Sunday.

And the success broke a Group 1 winning drought for the Charles Leck – Saimee Jumaat combination who hadn’t been successful at the highest level since Ninetyfive Emperor took the 2005 Lion City Cup.

Ridden behind the speed, Chevron scored by a length-and-a-quarter over The Hornet (Michael Cahill) with Top Spin (Noel Callow) a nose away third.

The time for the 1800m journey was 1:48.0, just 0.7 seconds outside the course record.

Stedman (John Powell) assumed the role of pacemaker with Itmaybeyou (Mark Gallagher) sitting on his outside. Top Spin took the sit behind this duo with Saimee aboard Chevron on his outside. Recast (Benny Woodworth) and The Hornet were next in line.

An even tempo ensured to the long run home on the outer track where there was little change in the order.

Soon after straightening Cahill moved up on The Hornet which in turn got Saimee going. The pair quickly took over from the leading pair before Chevron kicked into overdrive, setting up his winning break.

While Saimee and Cahill were making their winning moves, Callow was having trouble getting Top Spin into clear galloping room. With his penchant for laying-in Top Spin eventually did get clear and again found the fence. Although he tried hard he was unable to peg back the winning margin.

With Leck not in attendance, assistant trainer John O’Hara said the plan was to take the sit behind the speed with Chevron.

“He’s settling a lot better in his races now,” said O’Hara. “We wanted to take the sit with him today if something wanted to lead.

“It worked out perfectly for us. We now know that he can come from behind.”

O’Hara said Chevron would have no problem handling the extra ground of the Group 1 $1.35 million Singapore Gold Cup over 2200m in three weeks time.

“He’s bred to get a mile-and-a-half (2400m),” said O’Hara. “The biggest question is ‘how he will be handicapped’?”

Saimee was aboard Chevron when the gelding got out with a big lead in the Group 1 Singapore Airlines International Cup over 2000m in May before compounding in the straight.

He said the gelding was now a lot more settled in his races.

“The pace was nice today and he settled really well,” said Saimee. “I decided to get moving early on him as I didn’t want to get into a sprint with the others.

“He’s a pretty good stayer and he’s certainly getting better with a bit of age on his side.”

Saimee is in a bit of a dilemma. While delighted with Chevron’s success, the leading jockey is also the rider of the Leck-trained Protege who could prove a lightweight chance.

“It’s going to be a tough choice, but first of all we have to see whether Protege can get into the field,” said Saimee.

Runner-up The Hornet ran his usual honest race but found Chevron too good on the day.

“He had a lovely run on the fence. I took him around Top Spin and he ran on very bravely,” said Cahill. “He is definitely a horse with huge potential and I reckon he will be a lot better next year.”

While disappointed with the defeat of Top Spin, Noel Callow said the run will bring the gelding to his peak for the Gold Cup.

“We had a lovely run on the inside of Itmaybeyou and Stedman but on the day the other pair were too good for us,” said Callow.

“The better track probably suited them a bit better than my bloke, but he’s pulled-up fine from the run and that’s the important part.”
