CARDMANIA-26

Sprint Champion Cardmania Dies

Cardmania, the 1993 champion sprinter and Breeders’ Cup Sprint (gr. I) winner, was euthanized Jan. 2 because of an internal tumor that was inoperable. The 26-year-old gelded son of Cox’s Ridge resided at the non-profit horse rescue United Pegasus Foundation.

“He was a local fan favorite and was even ridden in the Rose Parade, many, many years ago,” said Helen Meredith, whose husband, Derek Meredith, trained Cardmania. “He was a ranch favorite and will be missed by all our staff and volunteers.”

Racing for Jean Couvercelle, Cardmania got up to win the Sprint by neck from Meafara, with Gilded Time finishing third. In his only other triumph that year, Cardmania captured the Ancient Title Breeders’ Cup Handicap (gr. III) a month before the Classic.

In 1992, Cardmania ran third in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint.

During his career Cardmania won or placed in 24 stakes. His seven stakes wins also included a triumph in a group III stakes in Italy.

Bred in Kentucky by Delta Thoroughbreds, Cardmania was the first foal and one of two stakes winners out of French stakes winner L’Orangerie (by J. O. Tobin).

Coal Region Kid, a handsome 7YO bay gelded son of Madaglia d'Oro with a record of 12-2-5-2, broke down in the stretch Friday in the 5th at Santa Anita. He was vanned off and euthanized.

Joker Face, a 4YO brown gelding, took a bad step yesterday in the 7th at Santa Anita, was pulled up and vanned off. He had shattered the sesamoid bones in his right foreleg and was euthanized. 9-3-3-0, he was Mike Smith's mount in the 2011 "Battle of the Exes" match race between Smith and Chantal Sutherland. Joker Face was the winner of that race.

RIP

UNCLE SAM

Santa Anita: Mounts open up with Gomez out
By Jay Privman
ShareThis EmailPrint

ARCADIA, Calif. – With Jockey Garrett Gomez out of action with a foot injury, several choice stakes mounts at Santa Anita came open this holiday weekend, most notably Jeranimo, whom Gomez was scheduled to ride on Monday in the Grade 2, $150,000 San Gabriel Stakes for older turf horses.

Gomez was aboard Jeranimo for his last start, an impressive victory in the Grade 2 Citation Handicap at Hollywood Park on Nov. 26. Jeranimo is expected to be a heavy favorite in the San Gabriel. As of Tuesday, his trainer, Michael Pender, had not named a replacement.

Gomez also was scheduled to ride Balladry on Saturday in the Grade 2, $150,000 San Fernando Stakes for 4-year-olds. Gomez picked up that mount because Rafael Bejarano, who had ridden Balladry in his last five starts, opted to ride Prayer for Relief in the San Fernando.

“I’m working on Plan B. Actually, Garrett was my Plan B,” Eoin Harty, who trains Balladry, said Tuesday morning. “I’m not exactly sure where I stand. The first few choices I would have had are taken. Sometimes you just have to take a wait-and-see approach.”

The San Gabriel and San Fernando, as well as the Grade 2, $150,000 Santa Ynez Stakes on Sunday for 3-year-old filly sprinters, all are coming up fairly light on prospective runners.

Jeranimo’s main rival in the San Gabriel would be The Usual Q.T. if he makes his comeback in that spot, but trainer Jim Cassidy was not sure if going 1 1/8 miles first time out since May was prudent.

“I’m not sure what I’m going to do,” Cassidy said. “It’s a long way to go off such a long layoff.”

Jeranimo was first, and The Usual Q.T. third, the last time the San Gabriel was run, in December 2010.

In addition to Balladry and Prayer for Relief, the San Fernando, at 1 1/16 miles on the main track, is expected to attract Irish Art and Tapizar. Thirtyfirststreet, who was nominated to the race, was entered in Thursday’s sixth race, an optional claimer.

Another nominee, Uncle Sam, dropped dead during a workout last weekend at Hollywood Park, trainer Bob Baffert said. Uncle Sam was the second horse owned by Kaleem Shah, and trained by Baffert, to die of an apparent aortic rupture in recent weeks, the other being Irrefutable, who died after running in the Underwood Stakes at Hollywood Park in November.

Uncle Sam, 4, won twice in 10 starts. He was second in the Pomona Derby, and third in the Swaps Stakes, last year.

The Santa Ynez, at 6 1/2 furlongs, is headed by the unbeaten fillies Reneesgotzip and Rowdy Gal. Others expected to run are Candrea, Made to Love Her, and Painted Woman.

Rescue Groups Seek Help With Seized Horses

With the last horses removed from a Louisiana farm after they were discovered to be malnourished, a humane society and equine rescue groups in the state are seeking financial assistance in caring for the seized Thoroughbreds.

According to the Shreveport Times, the last 13 horses at Charles Ford’s Hillcrest Farm near Many, La., were removed from the property Jan. 10. The seizure began Jan. 6, and more than 60 horses have been removed from the farm. About 25 horses were reportedly found deceased on the property.

According to the newspaper, Ford has been charged with cruelty to animals and has been released on $2,500 bond.

Larry Kelly, president of the Sabine Parish Humane Society, which took possession of the horses, told the Times Ford has 15 days to post bond of $1,500 for each of the horses he wishes to retain. If he does that, the humane society must keep the horses for an additional 30 days.

Among the groups assisting the Sabine Parish Humane Society have been Remember Me Rescue and Louisiana Horse Rescue, which estimate the cost of care of the horses to be about $450 daily. Also assisting the humane society have been Shannon Rojas and the veterinary team at Louisiana State University.

Remember Me Rescue has petitioned the humane society to adopt all of the remaining horses, according to the group’s website. “If allowed to do so, we will rehabilitate, retrain, and re-home all of them over the next several months, and (they will) be placed in loving forever homes,” according to a message posted on the Remember Me Rescue website.

Stratheden Loses A Queen

Wednesday, 11 January 2012:

(Excerpt)

Tamworth's Stratheden Stud lost the queen of its broodmare band on the eve of the Gold Coast Magic Millions.

The 26-year-old Sommes Sound passed away but her legacy will be alive at the Gold Coast as she is the grandam of a Sebring colt to be offered on Friday and third dam of a Casino Prince colt listed for Sunday.

Purim, from colic.

He was 10 years old and had a lot of fans here - not to mention Sumwons first...

No link but the source who told me had direct contact... it was confirmed by the stud farm president...

Rest in peace, beautiful boy.

Happier days...
