Grand Slam Wager

I saw kasept posted one of these in the selections section. I hadn't heard of the wager so had too look it up at the nyra website.

This is a multi race wager where you are selecting runners in the first 3 legs that only have to show. If the ticket is alive after the first 3 legs, your selection(s) in the last leg has to win. The payoffs listed at drf the last few weeks are generally in the $30-50 range but there were days when it paid over $200 and over $500. I'm guessing these were days when a few strong favorites ran off the board in the qualifying legs because the odds on the winner of the last leg on the $500 day looked to be 4-1.

Has anyone been betting this? It looks like a good deal if you can get some qualifiers who are not favorites in and hope the favorite is off the board. Is that a reasonable approach?

Doesn't look like I can bet this at TVG anyway but I'm curious what those who have played this think of the wager.

It looks like this is a bet you can win and lose very easly

I bet it but I bet very little and very infrequently. I doubt people looking to gamble to win money bet it but it is fun and cheap.

The interesting aspect is that if you have a 2 x 3 x 2 x 3 ticket it is (theoretically) possible to have 12 live tickets (2 x 3 x 2 in the first 3 legs) going into the last leg. Winner in the last leg = 12x the payoff.

Also getting a shot in the first 3 does little good when the chalk hits the board also.

True dat. You want to have a chalk or two off the board in the first three to make a score. Look at this though:

I've been VERY intriguiged by the Grand Slam since Day One..

There's been SEVERAL great payoffs including the one you used as an example, and last Friday it paid $225 and was a snap to hit. I suggested a $21 ticket (1x1x1x3 x $7), which brought back nearly $900!

I've been trying singles in the first 3 legs and then a wide spread in the 4th as above. Andy Serling and discussed it a couple weeks ago on the show and then Steve Crist wrote about it at Andy's suggestion last Subday.
