There's always next year, maybe then

Actually if the Rangers don't do it now, they are going to have a difficult time signing all of their restricted/unrestricted free agents under the cap -

Figuring they will make a 1 year play for St. Louis ()

They still have to sign (in addition to Marty):

Staal (would assume wants a 5+ year deal)

Zuccarello

Stempniak

Hunwick

Talbot

Stepan

Hagelin

J.T. Miller

Fast

Moore

That's a lot of zeros and commas

Staal & Zuucs are already signed and for the love of God Stempniak was traded at the deadline.

Didn't type fast enough, so it's the 2nd crack at this... Dan, you need to stick to the Bolts.

Zuccarello, Stepan(?) and Staal are already locked up. Stempniak was TRADED a few months ago. Talbot will be traded, but he is signed thru next year. Fast and JT Miller are rookies, no contract issues yet. Hunwick is journeyman defenceman who isn't really an issue. Finally, based on Marty's play this year, hard to imagine him returning without a major pay cut.

Apparently that report was a little dated - but regardless, rookies or not - Fast and Miller are still restricted free agents next year.

Stall is going to account for 6 million against the cap, and Marty will likely get half of his 5.6 million to stay another year. That over 12% of your salary cap tied up in just two players - they are not going to be the same team next year.

Staal and Zucc were extended months ago, Stempniak is in Winnipeg, Talbot is a trade chip, I highly doubt they're bringing Marty back with the way he looks, and JT/Fast can be given reasonable two-year bridge deals. The only guys they need to lock up are Stepan (priority) and Hagelin.

The core is still young and most importantly Hank is in his prime. At this point, Id be shocked if Marty came back at all. Slats will shed some salary and they'll be fine.

translation: Slats will carve through a non-competitive teams roster and relieve them of their high end players for picks and prospects.
dilemma: Slats is running out of picks and prospects

The team has a bunch of young forwards sure, but their defense? very suspect. Staal no where near the same player since his injury, Girardi, getting long in the tooth, and they're on the books for the discount purchase of $11.3 total for next year. Boyle? $4.5 for another year, have fun with that one.
Keith Yandle? not sure what you're paying him, but it's too much.

let me not get started AGAIN rick nash, who matt wants to sweep under the rug as he's "doing the intangibles" ....biggest offensive threat on the team, 7 points in 15 games.....you can't spin that sh!t
