Default Santa Anita to close..

Per DRF...

So, obviously no SA Derby. I wonder if it’s just best to turn the horses out rather than working them indefinitely when they can’t race - and having them go sour.

Have to weather the storm. Hopefully this is all behind us in 8-12 weeks. Daily new cases in NJ exploded the past few days from 700-900 range to the 2000 range.

Santa Anita probably shouldn’t have been running for the past week or so.

Golden Gate is still running and they are in the same state. Perhaps those jockeys and horses go there and create bigger fields?

Unless they are now creating deadly lab viruses I don't think they can claim credit for this.

As few times modern horses actually race, a shut down of 3-4 months might not even affect a good number of their schedules.

Racing has done a great job trying to keep going but it is a good time to "clean up" some problems.

Special Mentions
The 146th renewal of the Kentucky Derby will be transferred to September 5, Churchill Downs announced March 17. The companion race for fillies, the Kentucky Oaks (G1), will be run the day prior, the first Friday in September.
The ensuing two jewels of the Triple Crown, the Preakness (G1) and Belmont S. (G1), are also under consideration to shift to the September-October time frame.

The Dubai World Cup (G1) will be postponed until next year.
NYRA is working closely with all appropriate parties, including media rights holder NBC Sports, to make a determination about the timing of the 2020 Belmont Stakes. NYRA will deliver an announcement only when that process has concluded to the satisfaction of state and local health departments.

I would be shocked if Los Alamitos is running tonight given the sudden shutdowns of both Golden Gate and Cal Expo in California.

If New York is still 2-4 weeks from an apex and there is a three month ramp down after that, New York is not ready for business until early August at best.

Look at the southern and midwestern states where travel was still near normal as of yesterday. These states will be 8 weeks behind the New York curve which would put their business into early October at best.

Unless there is some way to restrict interstate travel (which there isn't) and open business state-by-state (which there isn't), as a country, we will ready to open only after the longest path in this schedule which likely will be through the end of 2020. Goodness knows I hope I am wrong.

Emerald Downs was scheduled for 4/18 opening, now looking at 5/30.
April dates would have been 4/18, 4/25 & 4/26
May would have 12 days missed if 5/30 happens
EMD looking to extend end of meet to cover missed days
