I thought I read something about a week ago that said Oaklawn wasn't going to extend.
If I remember correctly it had to do something with lack of money for purses and apparently they need the time to renovate the track. The renovation takes place every year after the meet and it takes the entire off season to do.

I posted this in Churchill thread also:

Would the NY Pols consider getting Saratoga opened up in the late spring. NYC is not going to see relief from this for a while. It would make sense to go right up to Saratoga instead of Belmont. Start out with no fans and just try to get racing up in NY.

Several points to consider.

First, the cost of moving the downstate operation to Saratoga is large (housing, stipends, shipping) considering that there has been no money flowing for six weeks and counting. Without the fans in the stands, the revenue generated will be severely impacted.

Second, if there should be a continuing COVID-19 situation, the Capital District's ability to respond is fractional compared to downstate itself. Imagine people coming from across the country where a rolling apex is incomplete across all states.

Third, John Pricci reported (as a rumor) in the last 48 hours that New York will petition for reopening Belmont for studio racing in some form starting May 22nd, one week after the current Governor Cuomo shutdown. If we see bad results in the next three weeks or another growth in infection rates, you can expect the Governor to extend that May 15th date and therefore push out a potential Belmont opening.

Fourth, Saratoga's tighter spaces and social environment by its nature will make the social distancing discussion impossible. Until that piece is handled, there will be no fans at Saratoga.

So, it disappoints me, but there is no situation in which I see Saratoga operating this year for a (40-Day) meeting.

Tampa request to extend meet through May 30 is approved
Mike Welsch

Tampa Bay Downs has been granted approval by the Florida Division of Pari-Mutuel Wagering to extend its current meeting through May 30, Margo Flynn, vice president of marketing and publicity at the track, confirmed on Thursday.

Tampa Bay, one of the few facilities in the country currently conducting a live race meet, will run on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays during the final four weeks of May.

The 2019-2020 Tampa meet was scheduled to end on May 3. But with the majority of tracks around the country either closed or delaying their scheduled openings indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic, Tampa, which has been conducting racing without spectators since March 18, will stay open in part to accommodate trainers stabled locally who have no place to ship their horses at the present time.

Tampa management had previously informed horsemen they would be able to remain at the track at least through May 31.

Default Any news on other tracks?

Anywhere else opening?

Too bad there's no racing down here in SC. We'd be open.

... Martin Panza, senior vice president of racing for NYRA, said the proposal seeks racing to start-up at Belmont Park on Long Island, then move up to Saratoga in upstate for the scheduled July 16 opening. Belmont's scheduled April 24 opening has been delayed indefinitely.

Even without fans on-site, Panza said, the Saratoga meet is extremely important to NYRA's bottom line and to horsemen's purses, of which 35 or 40 percent are subsidized by slots revenue from the currently shuttered casino at Aqueduct.

“Those protocols are pretty extensive,” Panza told the Thoroughbred Daily News. “If given the opportunity to race, we're going to be extremely careful. There has been a lot of thought going into how we open and how we do it in the safest possible manner.”

Apparently, a meeting at Saratoga this year is very much still on the table without fans on-site according to Panza.

Santa Anita is going to open on May 15th. National Turf had sent an e-mail saying May 14th, but now they sent out a new one saying they had made a mistake and it will open May 15th. They may simply be getting their info from the Paulick Report. If that is the case, the article says it's not a done deal yet.

CHURCHILL STARTS RACING SATURDAY MAY 16

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Thursday, April 30, 2020) – Churchill Downs Racetrack officials today determined that opening day of the 2020 Spring Meet will be Saturday, May 16.

After opening weekend on May 16-17, racing at the historic Louisville racetrack will be staged Thursdays through Sundays with a special holiday Monday card on Memorial Day, May 25. Post time for the first race each day will be 1 p.m. (all times Eastern).

Vice President of Racing Ben Huffman is crafting a condition book for the schedule of races, including a revised stakes schedule, and it is expected to be released online this weekend so horsemen can begin preparing their horses for those engagements.

On Wednesday, Churchill Downs received approval from state officials to reopen its stable areas at both Churchill Downs Racetrack and the auxiliary training center Trackside on Monday, May 11 under strict guidelines to effectively mitigate the impact of COVID-19.

The stable areas will reopen under a phased, systematic approach. The following is a listing of racetracks and when horses based there may return to Churchill Downs’ stable areas between the hours of 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.:
  • Fair Grounds in New Orleans, La. (May 11-13);
  • Gulfstream Park in Hallandale, Fla., Tampa Bay Downs in Tampa, Fla. and horses based at Florida training centers (May 14-16);
  • Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Ark. (May 17-19);
  • All other locales (May 20)
Racing at Churchill Downs during the Spring Meet will be conducted spectator-free until government officials approve fans returning to the historic track. Only authorized racetrack employees and KHRC license holders who are providing support for a horse stabled at the facility will be permitted on property. This specifically includes only trainers with horses stabled or racing on the facility grounds and those who are responsible for the care of the horses (veterinarians, grooms, exercise riders and farriers).

Santa Anita Park Receives Approval To Continue Live Racing This Friday

Arcadia, CA (May 13, 2020) — Santa Anita Park has received approval from the Los Angeles County Health Department to resume safe live racing beginning this Friday, May 15 as part of Los Angeles County’s revision of its Safer at Home guidelines. Racing will be conducted without spectators and with essential personnel following strict protocols to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

Protocols instituted include mandatory face masks and daily health screening including temperature checks and mandatory social distancing while on the property, increased sanitation procedures, the creation of a Restricted Zone, housing jockeys, valets and other essential personnel who must have a negative COVID test to access, and revised saddling and pre-race protocol to increase physical distancing.

“We are very grateful for the open and continuous communication with both the Health Department and Supervisor Kathryn Barger’s office,” said Aidan Butler, Executive Director of California Racing Operations for The Stronach Group. “Supervisor Barger in particular, understood the importance of live racing to support thousands of individuals, and that we are able to accomplish it safely under these protocols.

“We also want to thank our stakeholders, including the Thoroughbred Owners of California, the California Thoroughbred Trainers, the Jockeys Guild, our Santa Anita Park team and our fans for their patience during this pandemic. This has been a difficult time for all. Now we are focused on getting back to work in a safe and secure manner.”
