Default 5 fan panel in NY

http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-raci...ans?source=rss

Quote:
“As the industry has suffered from declining handle, it would be prudent to hear from the fans whose interests, opinions and thoughtful suggestions have the potential to increase the popularity of New York racing and thus grow more jobs for our economy,” Sabini said at a June 29 meeting of the racing board.

Sabini said the panel’s creation is an attempt by regulators to consider more than just the views of owners, trainers and breeders. “What we all need to remember is that nobody gets a paycheck without the fans who enjoy playing the ponies” Sabini said.
I can only imagine who these five people they will choose to represent all of the racing fans are.....

You would be a prime candidate to voice the fan's perspective. Don't wait around for them to choose someone else. Contact them ASAP.

As I NYRA employee I doubt I'm eligible. But thanks.

I like the other two ideas.

Will there be a minimum IQ requirement? If not, they might as well stick with who they've got now.

I will help them here.

So many great things have happened for this sport over the last hundred years. Horse racing only has 4 true problems from our perspective. Just four. But they have killed the sport in many ways.

These are the four problems:

#1) Politicans don't know what is best for the games growth.

In a nutshell:

#2) Takeout is WAY too high.

In a nutshell:

Great, mind-boggling, eye-popping fortunes are no longer won and lost.

Now, unless you're very sharp - you're going to get bled into the red - and with no hope of making any great fortune.

Before; you could be a cock-fight fan from Pittsburgh with a $5-a-week job - turned $80 million man by age 43 (adjusted for inflation) You could be someone who beats people with an umbrella at the track - and make tens of millions betting (adjusted for inflation) Butcher, Walking cane salesman, and Hotel Bell Boys - from such modest professions transformed into people who bet incredible sums of money.

You know what is really sexy? Pirates and train robbers! Except these guys never hurt anybody (when they weren't packing an umbrella)

You know what isn't sexy? being seen as "in the same psychological league as dope fiends and child molesters" - as Beyer put it in Picking Winners - kind of harsh. I would have only gone with us now being viewed by society as 'lonely senior citizens and complusive, degenerate, scumbags.

Ask Dr. Allday what he thinks of bettors. He likes Shiek Mohammed, though! At least the New York Times no longer treats horse bettors as though we're Paris Hilton and villifies us. Pirates and train robbers who only steal from bookies, with a commision edge, who typically win the loot back over time!? For shame! Bettors need to be taxed so extremely - so they no longer have reason to bet.

#3) Industry people who don't get it: You graduated from your lawyer classes? Cool, so did our fellow DT poster Tector. You know what I think is cool about Tector? 1.) He's a competent, dedicated, and respectable horse player (I wonder about you?) 2.) He's out there making it as a lawyer - he's not some slapd!ck stealing a fat paycheck in the racing industry.

And the ones who didn't graduate from law school seem to be just as bad or worse.

And the ones who say all the right things ('sup Barry Schwartz and Charles Hayword) can't seem to do much when it comes time to dealing politicians and doing political stuff.

#4) Getting innovative with exchange wagering and not screwing it up:

I've been involved with betting exchanges off and on since 2003. More than one, in fact. If handled correctly by problem #3 (industry people) - they might cure some of the ills of problems #1 and #2 (politicans who hurt the game and excessively high takeout)

Possible quick fix potential here with #4!

And - the reason why takeout reduction isn't a quick fix (like HANA thinks) and needs to be reduced at a painfully slow and healthy Tampa Bay Downs like rate? Because too many people are dependant on employment in this industry.

I think aggressively slashing takeout to the levels they need to be for the best long term interest of the game - could possibly backfire and cause some short term problems and hand-ringing... that almost certainly would lead to reversals to old levels.

As fans - We must look to Write off the short term - for good of the long term. As much as we wants things our way right now.

Just my take as a fan and bettor.

If you are genuinely interested in making a difference you should attempt to contact them.
If you don't attempt and their selections turn out to be subpar in your opinion all I would say is "If you think you could do better show me."

Any of the NYers on the board could apply and wear an earpiece and Doug could feed the person what to say. It (allegedly) worked out well for GW in the 2004 debates.

They should appoint someone from outside of NY to address issues from a simulcast player's perspective. Since the group is only going to make non-binding suggestions and has no authority, it is all a bit meaningless anyway. Perhaps they will get some good ideas, but acting on those is another matter entirely.
