One-mile race gets test drive at Keeneland
By Marty McGee

LEXINGTON, Ky. – History of a sort will be made Friday with the running of the seventh race, a $64,000 optional claimer for 3-year-olds and up: It’s the first one-mile race on the Keeneland main track.

The race is essentially a road test prior to the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile on Oct. 30. With the 1 1/16-mile circumference of its main track, Keeneland never has contested races at a mile because of the short run into the first turn.

The reality is that these mile races actually will be “about” a mile since the starting gate will be positioned 70 yards before the regular finish pole; the clocking of the race won’t start until the lead horse triggers the electronic beam on the pole. The secondary finish wire (at the sixteenth pole) will be in use, as is done for all 1 1/16-mile dirt races here.

According to Keeneland racing secretary Ben Huffman: “The run to the first turn will be 463 feet, which actually is longer than what it is at Santa Anita,” where the BC Dirt Mile had been run the last three years. “We’ve actually got another three or four of these races in our condition book before the Breeders’ Cup to give the jockeys and our track crew a feel for them.”

Favorite Tale takes first step towards getting to Breeders' Cup Sprint
By Mike Welsch

FAVORITE TALE, who appeared doomed to miss the Breeders' Cup Sprint as a result of the quarantine at Parx which currently extends to Oct. 29 , took a big step towards making the race when he was moved to Twin Ponds Farm in Pennsylvania on Thursday. According to Dora Delgado of the Breeders' Cup, now that he has moved out of the quarantined track, officials can begin drawing blood on Favorite Tale and if he's clean for 14 days, he'd be cleared to ship to Keeneland in time to run in the Sprint. Favorite Tale won a Breeders' Cup Challenge race, the Smile at Gulfstream Park, in July.

According to trainer Guadalupe Preciado, Favorite Tale has a barn all to himself at the farm, which he said is located on the Maryland/Pennsylvania border just a couple of miles from the Fair Hills training center in Maryland.

"The one good thing is that it's pretty quiet here," said Preciado. "The bad thing is the track is only a 1/2 mile so I'm trying to figure out a way to breeze him. I might try to contact the people at Fair Hill to see if they'd allow me to bring my horse over there to work after regular training hours are over."

Cut badly above her right hind hock while winning the Buffalo Trace Franklin County Friday, this from Arnaud Delacour this morning on Ageless:

"Dr Hunt from Hagyard performed surgery last night. There is no structural damages. The surgery was essentially cleaning up the tissues and stitching the wound. She should be fine. Breeder's Cup is uncertain."

Ageless's cut to get another look
By Marty McGee

LEXINGTON, Ky. – A consultation with attending veterinarian Robert Hunt was planned for early this week to determine whether Ageless can resume training soon enough to make the Oct. 31 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, trainer Arnaud Delacour said Monday.

Ageless, owned by Lael Stables, incurred a cut below her left hock Friday at Keeneland during the running of the Franklin County Stakes, a race in which she rallied to win over the heavily favored Lady Shipman, earning a 99 Beyer Speed Figure. Ageless was vanned from the winner’s circle and transported to the nearby Hagyard Equine Medical Institute, where Hunt sutured a wound that was determined to be largely superficial.

“There is no structural damage,” said Delacour.

Meanwhile, Lady Shipman will remain at Keeneland to train toward the Turf Sprint, said Florida-based trainer Kathleen O’Connell.

70 yards WITHOUT being timed is BEYOND ridiculous. BC Committee made lots of real concessions to bring the BC to a completely unsuitable location.

Cant wait to go but I find not timing 70 friggin yards of a race plus the potential for additional run up simply comical.

Perhaps NYRA, TB, FG, etc. should learn from the most recognized brand in the industry and just not time races for 40 to 70 yards?

i agree, freddy. use tracks that can run the races. and for crying out loud, we all know what tracks have big days and big successes for the bc.
just ridiculous.

Does anyone know what the distance will be this year for the Turf Sprint? Also can someone explain to me why Filly and Mare Sprint is 7.0 Fr and the Sprint is 6.0? Isn't 6.0 kind of universal distance for sprint

Turf Sprint will be 5.5.

I think the distances were meant to differentiate the two a bit. All of the biggest F&M Sprint races during the year are at 7fs (Madison, Humana Distaff, Ballerina, La Brea) with the Princess Rooney (now a G2) being the only exception. I think the F&M sprint distance rationale just followed that lead.

It will be interesting, with some notable defections from the Sprint, to see if any female sprinters will opt for that race. To me, there is a huge chasm between 6f and 7f when it comes to sprinting.

For example, would horses like Meafara, Xtra Heat, Very Subtle, Safely Kept, and Soviet Problem have stuck with their own sex going 7f had there been a FM Sprint back in the 80s and 90s?

Considering she ran off (supposedly anyways) in her last start, wouldn't Taris possibly take a long look at the Sprint?

Limousine Liberal looks sharp after the break at Keeneland
By Mike Welsch

LIMOUSINE LIBERAL, runner-up behind the sensational 3-year-old sprinter Runhappy in the Grade 1 King's Bishop at Saratoga, topped a group of seven potential Breeders' Cup starters who worked after the harrows on a cool, clear Friday morning at Keeneland.

Limousine Liberal broke off at the 5/8's pole, ran past the Todd Pletcher team of RACE DAY and CURALINA as they began their drill at the half-mile pole and readily pulled away down the stretch, completing his final four furlongs in 47.40 for trainer Ben Colebrook.

Curalina was one of three Pletcher B Cup hopefuls to work after the break, going an easy half-mile in 48.47 while a head better than Race Day. Pletcher also sent out 2-year-old turfers THRILLED and AZAR to work a half-mile on the main track in 49.33 with a strong gallop out.

Hopeful winner RALIS went a solo 5/8's in 1:00.19, going out an opening 3/8's in 35.39 before tiring some to the wire while chasing an Eoin Harty team much of the way. STICKSTATELYDUDE(four furlongs in 48.23) and FRIVOLOUS also worked after the break.

Owner Sheila Rosenblum will have to put up a $100,000 fee to supplement La Verdad to the Filly and Mare Sprint, run Oct. 31 at Keeneland.
Didn't she already have to pay that to pre-enter?
