Hi, all. I have a question about my bets today. I bet a Pick 3 in races 8, 9 and 10. I checked for scratches around 9AM EDT and none were listed through Equibase. Then while watching the pre-race preparation for race 9 saw that numbers 1 and 8 were scratched. I picked numbers 1, 5 and 8 in this race.
Since my horses were scratched, do I get the favorite instead? That was Aloha West, who won. I've never won a multi-race wager so do not know the rules on this, would appreciate explanation. Also I'd never won any type of exotic, just wps, before hitting the exacta in the Stephen Foster, woo hoo! |

Eclipse, this probably isn't the answer you were hoping for, but I think it is accurate.
When Real Quiet scores the ROI, he uses the Equibase charts to gt the official results and payoffs. This is necessary because different racing jurisdictions have different rules for the way that late scratches are treated in multi race bets. The treatment of the pick 3 you played is shown in the chart for race 10, the final leg of that pick 3. It lists 5-4-3 as the payoff for the pick 3 (and it paid $8.35 for $0.50). That means to me that if any selections were scratched, you would get a refund, not be moved to the post time favorite. It is interesting to note (although it doesn't help you) that a pick 5 also ended with race 10. For those playing the pick 5, if they had played #1 or #8 in race 9, they would have received the PTF, which was the winning #4 Aloha West. I don't know why they treat the scratch one way for pick 3 purposes and another way for the pick 5, but that seems to be what the chart shows. Here's a link to the chart so you can see how it is set up. Just scroll down to race 10. https://www.equibase.com/premium/cha...02/2022&cy=USA As someone who dabbles in various exotic wagers, I can only encourage you to keep trying and learning as you go. Playing pick 3's, 4's and the like is like fishing for rainbow trout. It takes a lot of patience but is so satisfying when you finally catch one. |

Joly is correct. The 8 was a scratch before the start of the pick 3. Following is the rule
) Scratches and consolations: (1) Refunds. In the event a betting entry is scratched (which hereinafter includes being declared a non-starter or a non-betting starter) from any leg of the PICK-3 prior to “official” of the first leg, all bets containing such scratched betting entry shall be refunded to determine the gross pool and removed from further consideration in the pool. I don't know why the pick 5 gave the ptf on the 8. The rule I saw is 4. Scratches. If any betting interest is scratched, declared a non-starter or otherwise officially withdrawn from an S-5 race, then all S-5 wagers with the scratched/withdrawn betting interest in the race shall be refunded and deducted from the S-5 pool. Anyone have any explanations?

Since your horses were scratched earlier and before the first leg of your pick 3 had been run, any ticket with the scratched horses would be refunded. |

I understand what you are saying - trying to master the ins and outs of exotic wagering can be quite intimidating. On the other hand, our ROI provides a wonderful vehicle for learning about this aspect of wagering. It allows you to test ways to structure wagers in many different types of bets and learn what approaches can be profitable and which ones just don't work for you. At the end of the day, the only loss is to one's pride, with no damage to the bankroll. I've always felt that the ROI is the part of our weekly contests that affords the best opportunity for us to improve our handicapping (and even more important money management) and try to beat the dreaded takeout.

If it ain't broke and so forth, but I wouldn't be surprised if you did well with exotics. You always seem to do pretty well in the points contest which would seem to indicate that you might do equally well as an exotics player, but we all do what seems the most comfortable to us and really there doesn't seem to be much deviation from that for most of us. For myself, I often get a little perturbed with myself for not recognizing that a different sort of play sometimes presents an opportunity, but of course that is in hindsight. Everything is always crystal clear from that vantage point.

“ but I wouldn't be surprised if you did well with exotics. You always seem to do pretty well in the points contest which would seem to indicate that you might do equally well as an exotics player, “ =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-+ HERE IS WHY NOT POINTS WINS ARE BASED ON CHALK MY WIN BETS ARE ALWAYS 12/1 MINIMUM One time at the Turf Club Where I went every Saturday all day and played five tracks 13 is my favorite number and one Saturday on the 13th So that day I broke my traditional bets Did 1/3 = 13 EXACTAS ALL DAY It finally paid off at the end of the day Reaffirming 13 is my favorite number Last edited by RUFFIAN : 07-04-2022 at 01:39 PM. |

That's an interesting story, but I'm not sure what it has to do with betting the chalk. If you bet 1 and 3 in every race, I'm pretty sure you probably had more than a few long shots, but maybe not as long as you might have wanted.

It has nothing to do with CHALK It had to do with my only playing WIN ONLY Yeah because it was the 13th I decided early on that day to do 13 exacta |

Sounds to me like you had a successful day playing exactas. You hit one. Do you hit something every time you play in this contest? Also, I'm not sure that anyone should decide that they can't do something based on one attempt to do it. I'm sure that we all have a lot more failure than success in our contest, but we keep on trying. Also, on what you said about chalk in the points contest, don't say that out loud. Lots of people enjoy that contest and look on it as a pretty big accomplishment and maybe it is because it's fairly hard to win over the course of a year.
